Retro Gamer - Issue 201

Post by Crusty Starfish » Sat Nov 23, 2019 9:25 pm

Wow! I've not finished 200 yet and through the letterbox pops 201 :o

A very odd looking cover for this one! You can't see Retro Gamer - or any other text in certain light, kinda reflective. The only thing you see is some gameboy looking thing in the middle :? Analogue Exclusive... whatever that is.

Contents:
Making of Spellbound - Looking forwrad to this
Making of Conan - Apple II/A8/C64 - sounds good
Making of Fist II - Underrated game, looking forward to this.
Ultimate guide to Pole Position - ACE! :)
Making of Bits - Bits in our house means 'private parts'. This appears to be some old TV show. Interesting.
Hardware Heaven - This is Cool Satern. - No idea.
From the Archives - Falcom. - No idea.
Making of FAR CRY - Hard to believe something that looks and plays so good, even now, is retro! Deffo gets a read from me!
Introducing the Analogue Pocket - Ah! So the cover is for whatever this thing is! Better read it I suppose!
Jet Set Willy guided tour - Matthew Smith takes a walk through EVERY screen... OH YES! THIS WILL BE ARTICLE No1 THAT I READ :)
LOKI the lost spectrum - Martyn Carroll has the design Docs for the missing Speccy! Should be interesting!

For me, this looks like it's going to be one awesome issue! And I've not finished 200 - and that also is an awesome issue.

I need more time!

EDIT! - forgot to say......... there is a 2020 Calendar with what looks like loads of Spectrum loading screens. Would have preferred a mixture of different machines loading screens, but it looks nice.
AND a Games Radar presents The Ultimate Guide to Nintendo 2019/2020 - I'm thinking of getting a Switch, so this is actually quite handy :)

Not sold on the cover - maybe advertising had something to do with it but who cares, not fussed, its what's inside that counts.

Loved Spellbound and the JSW guided tour sounds great.

Didn't get the Nintendo booklet in my subs packaging - no great loss.

Love the cover, reminds me of Edge magazine. Very simple but very effective.

Looks like a great issue for me. Just finished the JSW room tour and that’s a great read. I’d totally forgotten that there were meant to be 4 more rooms!

That Nintendo book that I got in my Subs issue comes with a 10% discount code for use on the Nintendo website... I've just stuck a Switch and one of those Labo things in my basket for £251... I'm hovering over the BUY button but something tells me prices may get even better on Black Friday. Decisions!

Excellent! esp the Jet Set Willy walkthrough, here's hoping for a complete Manic Miner/Jet Set Willy only issue with added Matthew Smith. :)

I love Barry Leitch soundtracks and I'm always disppointed that there's such a short notice for our questions here in the forum. I would love to ask him some questions:(

Sorry you missed it - it was a very last-minute commission so there wasn't much time to get questions in.
If you send me a Private Message here on the forum, I will see if I can get some answers for you direct from Barry.

I really love the Fist II article. It exactly expresses how I felt when playing the game for the first time three decades ago. The freedom of wandering, desolate empty atmosphere and eerie soundtracks kept me coming back. The author is right saying the game was ahead of its time with some mechanics you would later see in Dark Souls and walking simulator games.

I especially remember the mixed reviews it got in the press and how it confused its readers. In the first videogames magazine I ever bought, Commodore User in November 1986, it scored 08 out of 10 (You can can read it at http://amr.abime.net/review_29992). A month later, videogames magazine Zzap! slagged the game off by giving it 39%.
In the following months the game was discussed by readers in the letters pages in both magazines by comparing the scores and highlighting bugs that were found.

I had forgotten about Fist II but the article brought all these memories back. Thanks.
I am going to download a C64 emulator now just to play the game again.
