Quick Reference Guide to Retro Metroidvania/Platform Adventure Games

Post by ommadawnyawn » Sat Oct 19, 2019 4:45 am

https://platformadventure.weebly.com/

Inspired by Jeremy Parish's site and YT series in early 2019, I started to document and create a resource for the earlier history of one of my fave genres. Each game entry lists defining features relating to the genre and links to more info in the form of playthroughs and reviews. On the site you have sorting by year, platform and generations (a WIP thing, might change). There's also a page on forerunners/precursors from the period before the first Metroid, and one on outlier games (games outside of but featuring some elements associated with the genre).

I consider the '80s and early '90s pages to be about 85% done so far and am currently working on the mid-late '90s pages. I'm not sure I'll cover the '00s and beyond, I might cut it off around the late '00s to keep it focused on the earlier history of the genre which is what I was interested in documenting in the first place. But we'll see what happens and I can always come back to it later on. The site itself should explain the rest, if it doesn't then let me know.

Updated it with info on Tron Bonne (PS1). More of a MV-lite.

I'd not really count System Shock as a Metroidvania. It's an immersive sim.

Interesting site, although a lot of games I wouldn't consider MetroidVanias at all really. Stuff like Donkey Kong Country and Mario 64 etc. Good to have a look through, though.

As I explain on the Outliers page:
"A page for those games that are related to the genre in some ways, but don't quite fit in for one or more reasons, generally relating to the their overarching structure or a lack of platforming. I've decided not to include strictly overhead/top down view action adventure games (also known as Zelda clones) with platforming here, nor isometric games, because there are many of them and because I'll probably make a separate page for them at some point."

Those listed under that aren't full MV no, but might still be interesting to play for MV fans and gives some context to the evolution of the genre.

Thanks for having a look!

You may want to include Aliens : Infestation on the Nintendo DS - the metroid games (which are a contributer to the phrase "Metroidvania") were heavily influenced by the Alien franchise and - while short - is a great example of the metroidvania style of games.

I'm aware of it, looks decent. I'll get to it eventually, though 2011 seems quite far into the future at this rate.

I started adding to a 3D MVs youtube playlist, and just finished a first draft of the gen 1 list as a playlist.

Looking at your list of games, there's a couple that don't belong - Delta Force for example has no metroidvania or platform adventure aspects at all and has no backtracking at all. At best it's an open-world tactical shooter (and even then if one enemy is alerted, every enemy on the level becomes alerted)
