Pinball Dreams Amstrad CPC finally released

Post by ivarf » Fri Oct 04, 2019 5:49 am

Quality capture from a real Amstrad CRT screen running Pinball Dreams. It looks lovely, way better than on an emulator. This really is Atari ST quality on the humble Amstrad CPC

That's a truly awful quality video, but the ball action seems smooth, pretty good for an 8 bit conversion.

I linked that video, as it is the best video I have found so far to show the games smoothness. Emulators don't do the game justice

I wonder if someone will try to do a ZX Spectrum or C64 version?

Fair play to the coders, that’s a great conversion.

I'm a little bit late to the topic, but yeah, it's great. Totally worth the wait.

So far as running the game in an emulator, it'll make a big difference if you can set your monitor refresh rate to a multiple of 50 Hz. That's not possible on a lot of modern flat panels, but some of them - usually the more gaming branded ones - will go to 100 Hz or sometimes even 150 (not that that makes a difference in this case) allowing the game to run at full speed and update the game in sync. Otherwise, you're going to get a little bit of juddering as it syncs up with the 60 Hz display.

I can also see some colour blending going on, which extends the machine's palette by rapidly alternating between frames. That looks great on an old 80s monitor with the slow phosphor, but just turns into ugly strobing on anything modern. Some emulators have a setting that allows you to simulate this though.

There was a C64 version in development, they released an Ignition table preview. But no updates on that for a while now...

If I remember correctly that version was cancelled due to lack of memory. I guess he tried a 64kB version. Maybe it is uncommon to have more than 64 kB in a C64? I really like the music of the c64 version, fast and smooth, but the 4/3 screen mode used shows far to little of the pinball table. I have seen the same problem in some Amstrad shooters, you don't have time to react as the enemy/ball is off screen.
