Yesterzine - The Literal Magazine Show

Post by Dudley » Fri Apr 12, 2019 6:39 pm

I just realised, although Darran knows about this, I never mentioned it here.

Hi I'm Dudley, I posted here about a decade ago and then I didn't for a bit. (Still a better love story than Twilight).

Mainly to see if I could, I've made a 6 part YouTube retro documentary series called Yesterzine.

Every week we pick an old video gaming magazine and re-play the best and worst reviewed games in that issue to see how well they've aged. We'll also look at any other interesting games in the issue that might be more famous now than actual winners. If there's a chance there's also a look at the culture of the time, which so far has included Cover Disks and the days when to get a game within a year of release you might have to import it from Japan.

Here's a trailer

Here's an episode 1

https://youtu.be/0N-4wnaN9Is

Episode 1 "Technically Graphics" is "The One Amiga" from July 1992. The Gaming Heaven is The Secret of Monkey Island 2. The gaming hell is forgotten turn based war game "Spoils of War". In the cover feature we look at the disks, featuring a bike game that blew my mind at the time and a PD game that might have inspired a much more famous recent title.

Here's an episode 2

https://youtu.be/k84ErFpEkp0

Episode 2 "Explosive bum squirts" is "Super Play" from November 1994. The Gaming Heaven is Street Racer, but were Super Play right to call it the equal of Super Mario Kart. We play that as well to make sure. The gaming hell is "The Death and Return of Superman" but there may be a better contender hidden in Super Play's pages. The Cover Feature is the Secret of Mana and why a year old game was such big news in late 1994.

New episodes are every Friday at 5:30PM UK.

Much appreciated both.

Yeah it was certainly one of those "I've had the idea so now I've got to do it" moments.

Better than the last time that happened, which ended in my throwing my car an 8th birthday party.

It's Episode 3!

And given it was Nintendo last week, it's Sega this, and a veritable bounty of games. The new Mega Drive Sonic game barely scratches into the other mentions.

Fifa is the highest scoring game, but is it even the best football game in the issue?

Why is the 3rd best selling Mega Drive game of all time absolutely nowhere

The Cover feature is the Master System's indian summer of superb titles late in its life.

And the Gaming Hell is the forgotten Game Gear version of Jurassic Park, which shares nothing with the Mega Drive title.

Plus a special guest! Who none of you know! But she's lovely I promise!
