What's your favourite Cinematronics / Leland arcade game?

Post by The Laird » Fri Jul 13, 2018 10:23 am

Cinematronics was the one of the true pioneers of vector based arcade games and also laser disc technology. They released a number of very innovative and successful titles before being bought out by Tradewest in 1987 and renamed Leland Corporation. From there they went onto even more success in the arcades as well publishing many games for the home consoles of the era. They were taken over by Williams Electronics in 1994 and then closed down around a year later.

You can watch video featuring gameplay footage from all their titles HERE!

This ones quite tough, as I liked a lot of these games.

So I will go for arguably the most famous one with the least amount of gameplay. Dragons Lair. As an arty farty guy who is a fan of Bluth and Disney art and animation, and as something that appeared in the arcades and literally made jaws drop with it's stunning A/V quality. I think in the arcades it was something I only dared to play twice- expensive to play and over quick! But man was it gorgeous...would much prefer to watch another player who knew what they were doing play it rather than have a go!

I found it really hard too! Especially choosing between the vector games, all of which I own for the Vectrex.

In the end I went with Armor Attack, but that could change on a daily basis.

more into the racing games myself, INDY HEAT is a cracker, but lumping off hours on IVAN STEWART in the arcade, and helping me through my pain through new teeth braces IN THE EIGHTIES by spending days on it on the spectrum ..... SUPER OFF ROAD is my pick

think i played DRAGONS LAIR once :)

I played Dragon's Lair once and don't think I got any further than the second screen

I had much more fun watching other people play it.

It's far from their best game, but my favourite would be Dragon's Lair.

I got pretty good at it. Not finished the arcade version yet, but I have finished the C64 and ST versions.

Years ago I bought the Digital Leisure Dragon's Lair DVD from Poundland. I don't know if it's still a thing, but the Daphne emulator used to use the DVD as validation you owned a licensed version (with approval from Digital Leisure who owned the rights) and would download and set up the files needed to emulate it properly. I liked that I didn't need to download dodgy romz or buy it yet again.

Yeah, I go with that- I think Dragons Lair is my favourite for the reasons above, but I don't think it is their best, as they have some great games with terrific gameplay.
I still have the DVD game as well, which is good for the documentary extra that comes with it. But as a game, I really struggle. But you can just put it on free play and watch the thing!

for nostalgia reasons alone I can't pick between Tail Gunner and Dragons Lair
one of the biggest collections of classic 70's, 80'S and on wrestling and boxing around - http://www.freewebs.com/cbenee

Seems there was an extra character that shouldn't be there! Fixed now!
