1-UP / 2-UP
Just wondering (and I'm probably being dense here) but does anyone know what the history behind "1-UP" is in games? What does 1-UP actually stand for? Or does it just mean "You're up next" sort of thing? Obviously I knew that if 1-UP was displayed then player 1 was having their go and 2-up meant player 2 was having their go..... but what is 'UP' ?

I always thought a 1-up was when you collected/earned an extra life.
Re: 1-UP / 2-UP
Yeah, that might be the case, but WHY?
What is U.P.? In a lot of old arcade games I remember seeing the text "1-UP" at the top of the screen for instance, so it wasn't always when lives were collected...

Not as good as the CPC Bruce Lee. Have 9 lives, collect 1 more and get 89 extra free of charge...

Another first for SMB then. Can't even remember the last current game I played that had a set number of lives, but to be honest I don't really miss the concept
