The Rambling bloke was Rowely Birkin QCnand was on the Fast Show.
Harry Enfield was amazingly funny back in the day, right from Loadsamoney and Stavros through Harry Enfield's Television Programme (rugby players sketch still funniest ever) to ...and Chums.

Mr Chomondley-Warner was a work of genius too.

Love this, amazed that it has never come out on DVD as a proper full series. Amazon has a listing but never came out. Funnily enough I am watching The Fast Show series 1 right now after another conversation on a fishing forum.

I've always found Harry's work inconsistent. Some of it is great, some of it is poor (like the series he did for Sky). Harry & Paul has recently been more hit than miss, and Harry & Paul's Story of the Twos last year (marking 50 years of BBC 2 by sending up lots of familiar programs) was really good.

Yeah I think that's a fair assessment. In addition I'd say that some gags are a bit homophobic so nowadays look a bit juvenile.

Think for its time it was excellent, so many great characters and catch phrases 'only meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' etc, german tourist apologing for the actions of his nation during the way, of course Kevin and Perry etc.

I tried watching that series on Sky a while back and i dont know, perhaps my taste has changed or perhaps i just didnt find it so funny nowadays. Just didnt 'click' with it.

But those early shows in the 90's were superb

A massive fan of the original series and along with Spitting Image would be scrutinized and copied the very next day in school.

Homophobic, yes, but this is still one of my favourite sketches ever:

My comics blog (mostly lesser-known UK stuff from the 80s and 90s)

It's probably Enfield's best work. Yeah, some of it has dated and so on - but there are still funny things and well observed moments from the characters(the Old Gits and the Only Me guy spring to mind!). I liked the "Benny Elton" send-up - I thought that was clever - as was the "Remains of the Day" meet "Terminator" paraody with Martin Clunes in that.

As it's near F1 season - here's an F1 themed piece of Enfield :-
