Retro Gamer Issue 109 Official Feedback
I got mine this morning, had a little read and flick through, here are a few thoughts so far:
- The Ultimate cover is excellent, I love all those classic pixels and bright colours
- What is with using the comedy title in the 2600 chart again? Rather silly if you ask me.
- Marty's Jack Tramiel article is utterly superb, really great tribute to the industry legend.
- Shame to see from the forum reduced to nothing again.
- Nice to see Hat Trick but strange to see no mention of the only home conversion on the Atari 7800.
- Look forward to reading the Ultimate, Alexey Pajitnov and Cascade articles.
- Back To Black article has to be the least retro thing to ever appear in Retro Gamer and then we get a modern future classic on top of that too!
Overall seems like a pretty good issue!

Lee had nothing to do with that, and with only two pages to play with, I wanted to concentrate on his story.Nice to see Hat Trick but strange to see no mention of the only home conversion on the Atari 7800.
(Incidentally, if anyone's wondering where the Lode Runner making-of vanished to, I'm told that will now run in a couple of issues’ time.)

It was still strange to see a iPhone game losely based on Hat Trick mentioned over an actual conversion, the modern iOS game wasn't by Lee either.CraigGrannell wrote:Lee had nothing to do with that, and with only two pages to play with, I wanted to concentrate on his story.Nice to see Hat Trick but strange to see no mention of the only home conversion on the Atari 7800.

Fair enough. I just figured an actual mini-making-of of a recent update (thereby showing some modern devs loved the game) would be of more interest than "here's a screen grab from the Atari 7800", given that we don't have any more info on that release. FWIW, anyone wanting to check out that version, head over to AtariAge.The Laird wrote:It was still strange to see a iPhone game losely based on Hat Trick mentioned over an actual conversion, the modern iOS game wasn't by Lee either.

I've been on holiday and only just seen the issue.martyg wrote:No usual video preview from Darran?
I'll aim to get one up tonight.
Also a game that remakes a 14-year old game is well within Retro Gamer's remit. We're doing Nintendo Land next month, so I'm expecting the brains of some readers to explode!

Capcom USA did a C64 conversion of Hat Trick... So the 7800 version is not the only home version. The Laird wrote:I got mine this morning, had a little read and flick through, here are a few thoughts so far:

And as Darran said, Half Life is 14 years old. It's not like it was given the cover and promoted as the most important article in the mag. Mirror's Edge is nearly five years old and is destined to be a future classic; the critical opinion on many websites has shifted to promote it as under-rated at the time...

Fair enough, I have never heard of or seen the C64 version. Should have got a mention too then probably, over an iOS game anyway.merman wrote: Capcom USA did a C64 conversion of Hat Trick... So the 7800 version is not the only home version.

Half Life might be but Black Mesa isn't

I already said it was a good issue so let's not focus on the negatives and look at the positives instead shall we.
Re: Retro Gamer Issue 109 Official Feedback
The Half-Life piece has been taken directly from GamesTM, hasn't it?

Wasn't Renegade supposed to feature in this issue??....gutted!

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 109 Official Feedback
Well the only reason I said that was because GamesTM have a piece on it, and it was written by Ian Dransfield, who I know usually writes for Imagine's current-gen mags. I admit I could be wrong, hence why it was a question.jdanddiet wrote:I very much doubt thatGabe wrote:The Half-Life piece has been taken directly from GamesTM, hasn't it?
