From the Forum Issue 90
When did you realise the 8-bit computers had finally died? (from a commercial point of view, we know we're all still playing them).
Re: From the Forum Issue 90
8-bit computing died for me when my mate upgraded from the Amiga version of Worms to the PlayStation port. We thought there was nothing wrong with the Amiga Worms, but why have cotton when you can have silk? The PlayStation was too cool not to start play it on.

Re: From the Forum Issue 90
Although to me they never died really, there were 2 moments when I realised they were being superseded. The first was when Crash became no more than a pamphlet & the second was when I played Castle of Illusion on my mate's imported Megadrive.

Trying to play a port of street fighter 2 on speccy, you could loaded the higher quality MD port in two seconds!.
Re: From the Forum Issue 90
When a previously C64 owning mate loaded F/A 18 Interceptor on his new Amiga, it was at that point my world had changed.
HADDOCKEN!

Re: From the Forum Issue 90
From my perpective , the 8bit days where numbered when I moved to the Atari ST , the 16bit machines just where the next level, and not owning C64, since I grew up on Atari from day one, the Atari 8bit range hardly seen any new releases other than from Avalon software, the c64,spectrum, CPC continued to get releases long into the arrival of the 16bit era, so for me it was over in 1986 for 8bit gaming.

funnily enough, it was the street fighter 2 debacle for the c64 that made me realise the c64 was "dying".Fred83 wrote:Trying to play a port of street fighter 2 on speccy, you could loaded the higher quality MD port in two seconds!.
only in a relative "at the time" sense, obviously. i saved up for an amiga from then.
Re: From the Forum Issue 90
Despite all the cartridge based systems, it was the advent of the CD-Rom as a storage device in the early 90's that really sealed it for me. Cassettes (and even floppy discs) suddenly looked hopelessly inadequate in comparison

September 1987 because that's when I started my first job & I stopped gaming for some weird reason, leaving my poor old Spectrum to gather dust in the loft.

When the retailers stop stocking the games.

When Space Harrier came out, and I realised that the 8-bits would never be able to come close to reproducing the new arcade experience.

When I turned them on and nothing happened.
Or more accurately when I got hold of an Atari ST with the discovery pack.

When Zzap 64 started giving the Amiga more and more coverage (And CU going Amiga only), i knew my C64 days were numbered.
By the time i bought my 520STFM, C64 releases tended to be mainly budget re-releases and there was so little i wanted on C64 in terms of full price releases, knew the era was over.
