Playstation Recommendations

Post by David » Tue May 26, 2009 7:46 am

I had an original playstation back when they were released.

Due to being at school at the time and being skint, I only ever had 2 or 3 games at a time (trading them in for newer games when they came out, etc) and I swapped over the the saturn after about a year of having it.

So, I have missed out on loads of PS games over the years.

At a car boot sale at the weekend I picked up the following:

Playstation console (original shape) boxed with controller
Tomb Raider
Grand Theft Auto
Mickey's Wild Adventure
Jigsaw Mania
3..2..1..SMURFS! :? :(

What games do you good people recommend? On the lookout for Ridge Racer, Wipeout and Striker (Striker 96 it might have been called?)

Good find!

I'll recommend the same PS1 games I always do.

Hogs of War, Syndicate wars, Twisted Metal 2 (World Tour), Bishi Bashi Special, True Pinball.

Whatever you do don't play Olympic Soccer/Soccer '97 I went back to it once & it totally ruined my memories!

Depnds entirely on what kind of games you like, the PS1 has it all.

I'll have to disagree with that! Yeah they are flawed but still fun to play IMO - see my soccer 97 review on this site!

David, I think I have a duplicate of one of the Wipeouts (might be 2097, maybe 3, I'm not sure).

I know I deffo have Driver 1 & 2 if you want them. Accidentally ended up with dupes from the charity shop.

PM me your address if you want them.

What was the general opinion of Mickey's Wild Adventure (think it was Mickey Mania on the snes) at the time of it's release?

Only played it for 2 mins to test the console, but it looks like one of the great 90s Disney platformers.

Had originally thought it was going to be some cack 3D adventure game but it looks quite good

You've already got boobs, car-jacking, big eared mice, puzzles and little blue creatures. You have all you need.

haha

The smurf racing game did look quite good :D

Until I read the back and it says something like "A joy for any child, regardless of their age"

Jigsaw Mania though - seriously - was there any crap idea that DIDN'T get turned into a Playstation game at the end of the console's life?

You need some bone crunchers and high octane in there... here's my list:

Porche Challenge - best racer on the PS1
Destruction Derby
Toca Touring cars
Colin McRae rally 2 - best ever version
Tekken 3
Medal of Honor - amazing how they captured the World War atmosphere on the PS1
Silent Hill
Wipeout 3 - best ever
Ridge Racer Type 4
Resident Evil 2
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Trap Gunner
Harmful Park - probably the best shoot-em-up on the PS1
Tomb Raider - although looks dated these days.

If you like Mickey's game, I'd recommend Hercules and Rayman. Fun platforming games that are kinda simple and nice to look at.

As a general recommendation, I'd go for Tomb Raider II (better guns and scenery IMO), Resident Evil II (again same reasons) and Destruction Derby for sheer destruction-ness.

Tombi might be good, but its worth quite a bit.
