You briefly forgot
Final Fight. Did you not see the "Making of" article in RG?
Edit: It's since been added.
Why retro? Because you never forget your first love.

Personally I'd go with the original Streets of Rage, but since that's not an option I've gone for...
Final Fight.

I played through the original SoR not so long ago and have to say I don't think it has stood the test of time as well as the titles listed here. It's too easy to kill enemies using cheesy "punch-punch-pause-punch" infinite combos.
The soundtrack is still brilliant though.
Why retro? Because you never forget your first love.

I have a real soft spot for Golden Axe. Chasing after those pesky health/magic carrying imps and riding those wacky lizard creatures added a nice bit of variety.

I personally don't see how people can vote for Final Fight over Streets of Rage 2. It just has far more going for it, better moves, more characters, far better music, the list goes on. Final Fight only wins in one area for me: its got a Ninja in it. But then, he's a crap ninja, so it doesn't matter.
IMHO.

Since you haven't included Vendetta on there, I've opted for Final Fight.
Vendetta represents an amalgamation of the best things from both SoR2 and Final Fight, so I think it should be included even though its not as well known.

Feel free to add me on XBL.

This is a hard one because of the difference in machines...
Final Fight arcade is great, SOR II is fantastic for a Megadrive game but I have to vote for Target Renegade on the Spectrum, what a fantasic game to fit in such a small machine.

I've gone for Final Fight as it's the one I've spent most time on, Target Renegade is a great game on the Spectrum but a little too easy, Golden Axe is pretty good, I don't think Kung Fu Master's got a lot going for it these days though.

Final Fight to me is still the classic. See so many arcade games that seem to have been built using the same engine a turtles, always puts me off a bit, basically same game but different characters. SOR2 wa excellent but I can go back to Final Fight again and again and it's always fresh, never gets dull.

My favourite scrolling fighter is the Aliens vs Predator arcade game but out of the available selection I've gone for Simpsons just because of the amount of 20p pieces that I pumped into that machine!
