Re: Top 25 Master System Games
Yes!
01-The Ninja - Over the many years of playing this, I can get 100% bonuses on the first three levels... After that it gets a bit mad looking for scrolls and all that, but it's still great.
02-Alex Kidd in Miracle World - So much variety in this one, a "classic" that actually deserves the title.
03-Alien3 - I like this version better than any other version. Think it's mostly for the bloody explosions when you kill the aliens in it.
04-Wonder Boy in Monster Land - More straightforward than Dragon's Trap, so better for quick plays (which is all I can do these days, so ideal)
05-Air Rescue - Someone in school brought this in and gave it to me one day, because he'd just got a PlayStation so didn't need his Master System games anymore. I'm glad he did, would probably've never heard of this one otherwise.

Re: Top 25 Master System Games
My first owned console, so probably the most nostalgic.
Like the cards as an alternative to the standard carts, if not all the games on them.
My 5 in no particular order
Ghost House
Astro Warrior
Wonderboy in Monster Land (only narrowly pips the others)
Shinobi
Alex Kidd in the Miracle world

Outrun Europa (good racer, even if not as good as the C64 or Amiga versions)
Wonderboy - The Dragon's Trap (a great mix of platforming and simple rpg)
Space Harrier (good conversion, considering the hardware gap with the arcade)
Sonic the Hedgehog (way better than the Megadrive game, slower, more "tactical")
Ninja Gaiden (wonderful graphics and awesome sense of speed)

1 - Moonwalker - Even if it does sound like a polyphonic ringtone, it still plays great
2 - Castle of Illusion - Different from its Mega Drive counterpart but still full of charm. Might even say I enjoy this version more
3 - Master of Darkness - A great alternative to Castlevania but not quite as cool
4 - Fantasy Zone - Love the colourful and cute setting.
5 - Teddy Boy - Very much my go to game on MS. Gets frantic in later levels and is great fun
The MS is all very new to me as I purchased one a few years ago. Had plenty of fun and found some real gems for the system.
Have to mention Sonic. I prefer the first MS game over the MD games. Probably because it feels more like a Platformer and plays at a slower pace. Less holding 'Right' and hoping for the best

Re: Top 25 Master System Games
Great little system, deserves more love. Here are my top 5:
1. Choplifter - Easily the best version of the classic game with its great graphics and more varied levels.
2. Bubble Bobble - Excellent conversion of the coin-op, the best on any 8-bit system.
3. Columns - One of the few SMS games that is better than the MD version, very addictive indeed.
4. Master Of Darkness - Brilliant clone of Castlevania that has some terrific visuals.
5. Fantasy Zone - Excellent conversion of the coin-op with bags and bags of fun gameplay.

Space Harrier was class on the Master System... and you can quote me on that.

Re: Top 25 Master System Games
It seems to me that history has been re written in certain quarters regarding the dear old Master System, in Europe and obviously Brazil the Master System was king and sold well and had many many fans, just because it didn't fly so well in the States does not an unsuccessful system make. I am not biased in any way as I loved my NES too but here in Britain particularly the Master System was much more popular. Retro Gamer seems to allude that the NES trounced the Master System everywhere, and that is was some kind of a minority system, that is not my recollection growing up in the late 80's and early 90's! Rant over- My top 5 in no particular order-

Re: Top 25 Master System Games
Indeed, it was a far better and more capable system than the NES. The overall quality of the games is far higher. The NES was decent but the SMS rules!sidney wrote:It seems to me that history has been re written in certain quarters regarding the dear old Master System, in Europe and obviously Brazil the Master System was king and sold well and had many many fans, just because it didn't fly so well in the States does not an unsuccessful system make.
