Please help me settle a near 18 year feud with my wife...
I say it's a dressing gown, she says it's a house coat.

Obviously I'm right, and a quick google adds weight to my argument. But as she still insists she is right (just to bug me probably!) I need the aid of the big guns. Can my fellow forumites add further weight to the argument, and tip the balance for me?
Any petulant "house coat" votes will be met with the ban hammer of course

I've never heard of a 'House Coat'. What was it that you were arguing about, was it a particular item, or are you saying that some people generally call a Dressing Gown a 'House Coat', whatever one of those is?

I'd guess House Coat is what our American friends would call a DRESSING GOWN...?

They are different things.
A dressing gown, as the name suggests, is a gown worn before or during or after the dressing process. I.e. it is a temporary garment for morning or night wear, or occasional day wear while changing.
A house coat is, as named, a coat for interior wear, more for comfort and warmth than discretion. While it may serve as a dressing gown, it is considered acceptable casual day wear when among acquaintances. A posh companion to the onesie, if you will.

I've always had a dressing gown, they are boss! Except when you first get your kinect and start doing kinect sports, blissfully unaware it's taking pics as you jump up and down.
