Re: Best songs by Queen/Freddie Mercury
My personal few faves are...
1 - Keep yourself alive.
2 - Love Of My Life
3- Far Away
4- Dont try so hard
5- The show must go on... Although the constant regrouping of random lead singers is growing tedious.
Ive noticed most of mine are slower - although Brighton Rock is brilliant in a weird way.
As with a lot of my fave bands such as Abba - im not too keen on the tracks that end up on compilations like "best rock album evar" or 80s party as these are normally the ones that non fans claim to suddenly be fan fans..or "know" the band based on popular tracks. Not to say theyre not brilliant but the constant airplay and karaoke versions on programs like xfactor have made me dislike them when I shouldnt.

Re: Best songs by Queen/Freddie Mercury
I always thought of Queen as 'dad rock' too, as a yoof.
Didn't mind if they were on the radio but not a big fan. Then I got a bit older and realised what I had missed. Obviously each to their own but they are undeniably masters of their craft with an awesome back catalogue of hits and album tracks that it is hard to pick from. Im sure I could think longer on it but these will do for now.
That said , I would go for most of the usual suspects and my two personal favourites
Fat bottomed girls
Seven Seas of Rhye
As a side note , even my boy enjoys them now and he was quite upset that We will Rock you has ended , as was I. Cheesy , bad storyline but never failed to get the crowd going.

Queen - best band ever.
There are far too many tracks to list here that I absolutely love. At the moment though, I am having a listen to some of the much older stuff off the first couple of albums. From Queen 1 - Jesus and Liar and from A Night at the Opera - The Prophet's Song, 39 and Death on Two Legs.
All cracking songs.

Queen - top band if slightly over rated these days (before live aid they were more or less finished) due to Freddy's departure - but what a showman! Something lacking in today's acts...
A fav song of mine by Freddy is Love Kills.

I dont agree that they were finished after Live Aid to be fair, Innuendo the single was number one in the charts if i remember, innuendo the album was a strong release too where there was only one or two iffy songs. The only annoyance i have is the amount of "plastic fans" that claimed to be lifelong fans the day he died.
Ahh i read your post wrong -before live aid-
The book on freddy mercury written by a PA is pretty interesting too, it seems that freddy rarely interacted with the group when they werent playing or making an album.

I pretty much just listen to Greatest Hits I and II but then they are pretty fantastic compilations.
Favourite tracks off there would have to be:
Another One Bites the Dust
Don't Stop Me Now
Flash
A Kind of Magic
Under Pressure
I Want It All - (Absolutely love this song).
I Want to Break Free
Who Wants to Live Forever
The Show Must Go On (Love this one as well)
Also enjoy a bit of Stone Cold Crazy

Maybe finished is a little unfair to say more like flagging in America with dwindling sales. Live Aid gave them the boost they needed to become one of the UK's best rock bands again.RetroAerosmith wrote:I dont agree that they were finished after Live Aid to be fair, Innuendo the single was number one in the charts if i remember, innuendo the album was a strong release too where there was only one or two iffy songs. Barcelona is also another excellent, late song.
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Re: Best songs by Queen/Freddie Mercury
Didnt they start flagging in the US because of the sudden knowledge that Mercury may have been gay and the male into female dressing up of the "i want to break free" video?
Re: Best songs by Queen/Freddie Mercury
That's certainly the popular perception and I don't doubt it played a part but I think Hot Space had an equally detrimental effect on their popularity in the States.
Releasing a disco album when there was the whole "disco is dead" backlash over there with vinyls being burnt in bonfires or run over by bulldozers was obviously a mis-step. KISS did a similar thing a couple of years before with Dynasty and it took them some time to recover.

Hot Space has some great tracks on it; but that's from today's perspective. Maybe I wouldn't have thought so back when it was released. The Works and A Night at the Opera are probably my favourites, and the only album I wasn't that keen on was The Miracle (although I do love that song and vid)

The Miracle was a brilliant album!
1. "Party" - this and Khashoggi's Ship together make a great track.
2. "Khashoggi's Ship"
3. "The Miracle" - for me, one of the worst songs on the album!
4. "I Want It All" - BRILLIANT! Love this track. Lots. And the vid.
5. "The Invisible Man" - Worst song on the Album.
Side two
1. "Breakthru" - Another brilliant song with excellent vid.
2. "Rain Must Fall" - Love this.
3. "Scandal" - One of my fave tracks on the album.
4. "My Baby Does Me" - really like this...
5. "Was It All Worth It" - another top track.
It always seemed odd to me that they released 2 so so tracks from this album into the charts when Scandal and Rain Must Fall are so much better than Miracle and Invisible Man.
