I was wondering if the magazine might do a feature on Crash team racing on the original playstation, it is 15 years old this year and I don't remember it ever really being mentioned before.
I have always loved kart racers, from mario kart and street racer on snes right through to sega and sonic racing on ps3/360. I would say that Crash team racing is better than all of them (edging out diddy kong racing on n64 due to superior multiplayer).
Does anyone have good memories of this awesome game?

CTR is the best
Mario Kart game. It had to be said
I remember buying this and it being one those PS1 games that was always being played in between new games. It really is one of my favourite games on the system though I must confess to using cheat codes to unlock N.Tropy and the penguin

Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Maybe, but the same could be said for
Diddy Kong Racing too.
Never played CTR myself so I can't know.

Better educate yourself then. Especially if you think Diddy Kong racing is good.

Yeah, I never really understood the love for Diddy Kong Racing. Didn't really enjoy it myself.
I used to love CTR, but playing it back now I must admit it's not aged brilliantly.
I'd still love to see the article though.

I'm not that big on "kart" racers, tbh. My personal fave is still the original SNES SMK. I found DKR quite good and innovative (adventure elements, free roaming, tough boss courses, kart/hoover/jet mechanic, ect.) but I did not like it all that much either. But compared to MK64, I find it was the more "feature packed" and ambitious game.
Still, I look forward to seeing if MK8 will take the "karting crown" again. It's not like it has much competition anyway...

I think the SNES Super Mario Kart is still the best "Super Mario Kart" style game, but CTR is pretty impressive, and a lot better than the awful floaty handling Mario Kart 64.

Mario Kart was in a league of it's own, but as far as tribute acts went this was up there with Diddy Kong Racing and Speed Freaks as being among the best. I'd really enjoy reading a Retro Gamer retrospective.

Both Diddy Kong Racing and Speed Freaks took a lot more practise to be any good at - they weren't something for anyone to just play occasionally, so the multiplayer wasn't as much fun for noobs. But they were more rewarding single-player games than Mario Kart.
Crash Team Racing was more accessible, like Mario Kart, but it had Diddy's excellent single-player Adventure-Racing game. The graphics weren't quite as smooth as the N64 games (I suspect a lower frame rate), but there was a much bigger and better single-player game there.

Loved it. Got really fond memories of it both as a single player and 2-player (especially the battle mode). I still play it sometimes on my PSP*.
Can't believe it's 15 years old.
* There was a Crash Tag game on the PSP but it had a load of stupid jumpy platform bits to get past, I could never be bothered with it.

Speed freaks was a great kart racing game on PS1, crash team not so much, too dark from what I remember, the crash characters were pretty bland too.

What game were you playing? Speed Freaks was rubbish.
Horrible controls, felt slow and the weapons were crap.

Only played the demo of Crash Team Racing, didn't enjoy it as much as Speed Freaks personally.
