/me leans over the parapet to shout down to the invaders:SirClive wrote:You can run but you can't hide! How can anyone hate Elite (well anyone who has played it after they got a doking computer).
Because it's thoroughly, throughly boring!
Load up with cargo, leave station, leave the station's gravity well (or whatever it was), jump into "hyperspace", jump out of "hyperspace", point ship at station, press J key until blocked, shoot asteroid blocking path, press J key until blocked, either a) kill Pirates and proceed to station or b) get killed by Pirates and restore from last save, enter station's gravity well (or whatever it was), press "c" to engage docking computer, or attempt to dock manually, sell cargo, upgrade ship and refuel, goto to step 1.
And that's about it as far as Elite goes! Ok, so you could deviate to some extent, but not very far. And I'm convinced that as soon as you'd figured out a really sweet and profitable trade triangle the computer sent those infernal Thargoids in to do you up like a kipper.
Once you'd maxed out the upgrades, traded everything you possibly could, completed the "Elite" missions, spent ages on a wild goose chase (were they called dreadnaughts or something like that? At any rate, I spent hours looking for the "City Sized" ships) and run the gammut from Fugitive to Elite there wasn't anything else to play for. Also the fact that you saw everything the game had to offer in the first 5 minutes didn't help much.

Hey, Sweden!

This isn't a good place to start with a first post but...
Golden Axe.
And Streets of Rage. And Double Dragon. And every side-scrolling beat-em up where you knock someone down until he stops getting back up again, then an arrow flashes to tell you to go towards the right-hand screen border.
Never saw the skill in playing any of them. Even when DD was new in my local arcade, I just didn't get it. It never clicked. Stand next to someone, bang the punch or kick button a few times, get hit yourself (which you can never seem to do anything to avoid), walk right. Repeat ad nauseum.

All Japanese RPGs = random number generators with graphics
Knight Lore - Nice graphics, shame about the boring gameplay
Head Over Heels - A ripoff of the above
Cybernoid - If the game didn't have finiky controls it would be average
Exolon - Gets boring after five minutes
