The hardest thing with these 2 games was actually freeing up enough memory to play the thing on my PC

That was actually the first puzzle of the game, it's a sneaky one isn't it!

I don't know if it can really be applied to RG but one of those other games mags (think it might have been GamesMaster) used to have a section called 'New Ways to Play' or some such.

As the name suggests people would send in ideas on new ways to play existing games. As an avid tightarse i always loved the idea of squeezing a little bit more gameplay out of one of my already finished games.

Actually, i do that with some games; trying to play shoot 'em ups without firing, heading backwards around the track on driving games... loads of fun! =-)

In the adventure games world it used to be sections called 'Just for laughs...' and you would get weird lists of things to type

I'd be interested in anything from the following:

A feature on old School Dos Games! I mean proper old school like Sopwith (1985) ( A quick google says the original prrammer is still does improvements to it!!)

Tex Murphy series by Access

A Wing Commander and Privateer Feature? I imagine Chris Roberts must still be about for a interview

And maybe a feature on Flight Sims starting with the original Psion Flight Simulator?

A few things I would love to see in the mag. A regular conversion capers section dedicated to 2 titles per month. A readers review section so regular readers can have thier say on classic titles.

Finally a monthly highscore challenge section where readers send in top scores from games via snapshot and explain what the rules and settings are for the game and people have to top the score. :)

Random SF1 rant... sorry...

To be honest, not to start an argument with the staff and the writers, but the only thing I'd change about Retro Gamer would be some of the random negativity ("this game sucks!"), without actually saying why. I'm sure this wasn't present in the old Retro Gamer. The best example of this is the magazine's stance on Street Fighter 1 for some reason. Damn, I can feel a rant coming on. Apologies in advance...

Examples of the constant SF1 bashing in previous issues such as Darren saying "we ignored the first game because it was criminally bad" whilst in another issue, someone, I forget who, says something like "the Street Fighter series is my favourite. Well, not the first game". First of all, who on Earth would think you meant the first game since it is so radically primitive compared to the rest and is like an entity in its own little world (plus nobody seems to remember it and admittedly, Capcom themselves ignored it up until recently!). Second of all, I think you've both undermined quite an important release in video game history.

I have little desire to play SF1 again but the point is you're talking about a real radical departure in gaming; it was very bold to release a title with six different methods of attack and special moves which required the player to manoeuvre the joystick in different directions, etc. I can agree that it didn't work that well for numerous reasons but it did have its fan base, otherwise Final Fight or SF2 would never have been released (the way I see it I'm not sure the technology was there in 87 or it was down to programming issues. It looked like they were trying to cram too much in to me. Either way, when they tried the same thing in 91, you got one of the best games ever. So they were right in theory. Can someone investigate this? That'd be a good read a good follow up to your otherwise fine SF piece a few issues ago). With the two big buttons, I'd defend SF1 saying that it was more of a novelty game than anything else much like Sonic Blastman was later or even After Burner (everyone must admit that the game isn't much fun without sitting in THAT chair in the arcades).

What I'm trying to say is, I'd like more clarity as to why some very original titles didn't work rather than taking the adolescent "X is crap" route. That's probably a decent article in itself.

Zzap! used to be down on everything (Speccy and Amstrad owners insert 64 joke here) but I always respected their opinions because they'd say why. It makes for a far more interesting read and doesn't make anyone sound like a 12 year old.

Okay, rant over. Thanks for the mag, it's usually dandy. Oh and...

"3. Get rid of those porn ads."

Yes but none of that changes the fact SF1 was incredibly poor :)

Sticking my face in a large pile of rabbit droppings would be a "radical departure" too but it's unlikely to be something I remember fondly 15 years later.

I've never seen more than a single screenshot of the first game.

I remember playing it in the arcades with pressure sensitive pads - the harder you hit them , the harder the kick/punch.It wasn't very good though .a similar game Human Killing Machine was better - but not much

Maybe for you, me and the Pope but it had its fans and the point I was making was that to not include it properly in an SF article was a complete cop out. HKM was another game I'd like to read about actually.

I dunno, maybe I just find some so called bad games as interesting as the ones considered good. The story behind ET for example is fascinating.

Funny thing is, I'd rather play all these games over Rise Of The Robots. Well it was funny to me.

Any other people remember playing the pads one, I've played it a few times myself, I wasn't aware that you could do the special moves on the first one either, but if they hadn't released the pads one would we not have the fairly standard multi button games we have today or where there others at the time that had them?

I may be wrong but I thought you could do fireballs and dragon punches, a bit difficult with those punch pads though.
