Why not? I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest Parsec. Because it really is that good.Antiriad2097 wrote:Don't forget the TI99. Not that it's going to make the top 200.

This is why we can't have nice things. You all know exactly what I meant, no need to be that guy who has a go at people when they call a dolphin a fish or the monster "Frankenstein".

And don't be giving me any of that Magical Flying Hat rubbish!

There are shedloads I could name - Chrono Trigger, Cannon Fodder, Super Probotector/Contra III, Super Castlevania IV, Sonic 2. But the one I'm going to go for is...

I nominate Golden Axe.

I think Golden Axe is the finest beat-em-up Sega ever produced. The whole theme of the game is excellent, I love how it sticks every fantasy cliche in the book in there. Dragons? Check. Axe wielding dwarf? Check. Sexy amazon? Check. The level design is inspired and the way the game unfolds as the map gets drawn in, that's a stroke of genius. The music, though, is easily the best thing about it. All the tunes are instantly recognisable and damn catchy. It even managed to sound good on PC speaker. The best port was probably the excellent Mega Drive version.

I know most lists of best games ever usually include Mario Games all over the top, but hell yeah, a game so good I bought it twice (PS3 enhanced version), and enjoyed it just as much the second time. And yes, I preferred it to the sequel.killbot wrote:There are shedloads I could name - Chrono Trigger, Cannon Fodder, Super Probotector/Contra III, Super Castlevania IV, Sonic 2. I have gone for the Actraiser, it engrossed me from start to finish, some superb platforming sections, at the start and end of the levels, and the brilliant God sim parts inbetween, it looks wonderful, and has one of the greatest soundtracks of the era IMO.

The first one had an indefinable atmosphere that the second - as brilliant as it doubtless was - didn't quite replicate for me. Both Monkey 1&2 are brilliant, though. I never got on with 3 and haven't played much of 4 although I do own a copy. I played through 5 on the Wii and thought it was okay, probably the best in the series since the second but a long way short of the first two.Fishsta wrote:I know most lists of best games ever usually include Mario Games all over the top, but hell yeah, a game so good I bought it twice (PS3 enhanced version), and enjoyed it just as much the second time. I was surprised not to see mentioned already... Populous
I recall stopping up almost all night, the night before the BIG computer shop in London playing this... Its not my favourite game of all time, perhaps not my favourite game of the 16 bit era, but a land mark release . . . .

Good call! I don't understand why this mix of genres wasn't used more. Someone needs to do a modern Actraiser.adippm82 wrote:I have gone for the Actraiser, it engrossed me from start to finish, some superb platforming sections, at the start and end of the levels, and the brilliant God sim parts inbetween, it looks wonderful, and has one of the greatest soundtracks of the era IMO.
