Rarity of a couple of games.

Post by Supernaut » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:37 am

I've been looking into some of the rarer games that are out there via retrocollect.com and found some things that really confuse me.

According to them Mega Games 6 vol2 is Very Rare: http://www.retrocollect.com/search/game-5024.html

I have a copy of this so I looked up prices on ebay and theres a buy it now for about 10 pounds. Is the site wrong?

Also I noticed Alex Kidd in Miracle World on the SMS was classed as Very Rare as well: http://www.retrocollect.com/search/game-824.html

Can anyone explain that? I understand that the game was built into the SMSII but the game had been out for quite a while before that console was released, I thought it was quite popular and there would have been a lot out there.

I figured you guys would be the best to ask about this.

I think that kind of answers your own question. Given that so many people already had the game built into their Master System IIs, maybe Sega didn't need to produce many hard copies of the game, hence their rarity.

Personally I never knew anyone who had a hard copy of that game (pretty much all of my friends who had Master Systems them had II's), I never saw any in the shops at the time and I don't think I've seen any since!

Please say if I'm missing the point here,

You've a query with some information on a website but rather then use that site's very own forum to attempt resolving your query you thought it more appropriate to ask here instead?

Could Mega Games be rare but not expensive, I mean loads of Sports games released at the end of a consoles life get a limited print run, and sell for about 10p in Gamestation and a little more online.. Say Gamecube Tales of Symphonia is rare and sells for lots and Gamecube Fifa is also rare but not worth spit

Ignore this one, Supernaut. He goes abit derpy from time to time. He'll be alright once he has his evening bowl of cornflakes.

Regards to your question, Its actually suprising to hear that 'most' games that were built into consoles, or came as a bundle pack with a console back in the day, actually fetch reasonable sums of money in their boxed counterparts, i.e/ Miracle World, Hang on, Duck Hunt etc..

Also, IIRC, A sega sports game pack that was included with alot of Gamegear bundles, sells for pennys as a cart only, but its boxed counterpart, that was released in very very small numbers, fetches a great deal.

The fact that a game was so 'readily' available, can be decieving in secondary market value.

As Shinobi suggests, and I can perfectly well concur due to doing this sort of thing myself, just because a game is rare, doesn't make it valuable, and just because it's valuable, it doesn't mean it's rare. You only have to look at certain RPGs for the SNES such as Chrono Trigger, the two FFs and Earthbound (all rarity 3-4 on a scale of 10) to see this in action. Or that for a long time, many of the hardest to find US PS1 games were regularly selling for much less on eBay than far easier to find titles. If the demand for a rare title is still less than its supply, then it won't garner nearly as much money as a more common game that has swathes of people looking to acquire it. Probably how a number of Nintendo's own games maintain their value.

If you have a doubt on the validity of information on a website, it makes perfect sense to go elsewhere for a second opinion.

What, like asking the forum members on the very same website you mean?

The original poster seems genuine enough to me, why can't we just answer his question sensibly rather being flippant about it. Let's decend another thread into a pointless dirge.

Erm, no.

I think we can assume that the forum members are likely to be agreeable with the site content, hence going elsewhere for a second opinion.

My original post was asked in sincerity and I would have thought that obvious. Then samhain81 does what he does best by laying down his usual brand of infantile flame bait. Go check out his recent post history if you doubt that. A forum moderator had a pop at him the other day for his 4chan-type trolling tactics but it's made no difference.

So you think it is unlikely that the forum members of a collector's website would be agreeable with the info provided on said site, and still think its a good place to hang out?

Other sites have game price guides and will happily amend the prices on the recommendation of the forum membership when appropriate to do so.
