Frustrating, Annoying Moments.

Post by crusto » Thu Jul 14, 2011 6:15 am

Things that would have been better off left out at the design stage in game development!

I'll kick things off with a section of awesome GoW 3. Where you have to play what I can only describe as a giant rotating piano with 4 keys. There is absolutely no need for this section at all. If I wanted rhythm action I would be playing Guitar Hero, not God of War. Factor in some seriously unforgiving timing issues and imo its insanely difficult to boot. Now I dont mind getting stuck at a hard to beat boss, but on a effing piano? No thanks. I cannot think of a single reason in favour of this section making it past the play testers unscathed. Terrible.

Edit: I have got past it by the way!

Good thread (although I like QTEs & rhythm based stuff in GoW  )

I ranted about this elsewhere, but the moment you possess a cop in Stubbs the Zombie it turns into a 3rd person shooter. If I wanted one of them I'd have bought one, It's not like they're in short supply on the Xbox.

I was having so much fun with it up to that point.

Knights Contract. Boss QTE that if you don't hit the right button take you back to the start of the boss fight, add in that they are increadibly tight to pull off as well. The final boss if you don't do the QTE event right kills you dead straight away, its also about 10 inputs long  Developers of these need a sound talking to.

That one level in Sonic Adventure 2 where you have five minutes to find all the Emerald bits as Rouge the Bat. Back in 2002 I was determined to finish that level before going on holiday for a week. Utterly failed, and then spent the whole holiday thinking about it. That was annoying.

Also, pretty much EVERYTHING when I tried playing Mario 64. From walking up the mountain, to sliding down the mountain, to just trying to walk forward - the whole thing nearly cost me my jaws (such was the gnashing of teeth and all that).

I can't remember if it was GoW 1 or 2 where you had to ascend rotating pillars with knives on them and if you got so much as scratched with one, you fell all the way to the bottom. That bit really ground my gears! A younger friend of mine has lent me Demons Souls, and said that'd test my patience too, seeing as I'm always going on about how easy games are nowadays, and how he wouldn't have lasted 5 mins in the hardcore 8-bit days

Fragile Dreams had a really annoying bit right at the end of the game - the motion sensor room was a real frustrating moment as if you even flinch just a little you have to fight a bunch of robots and then try the whole damn room again :x Almost ruined the game for me...

Megaman III for the Gameboy has one annoying level - the second half of Dustman's level has several pixel perfect jumps one after another. The kicker is that you can't use the Rush Jet powerup to avoid the whole bit because you have to beat Dustman in order to unlock it :P

That was the original GoW. And yeah, that was a pain in the ass!

Thanks mate, that's cleared that memory loss up :D . Bigger fool me for putting myself through it again with the HD PS3 version. Still, it looked a lot better as I was falling to the ground. A lot

In Croc on the PS1 theres this gem mini-game where you have to move a cauldron to catch these gems and eventually the Gobbo at the very end by standing on lef and right buttons.
Unfortunately the controls in Croc are so shitty that this seemingly easy task turns into one of the most aggrivating parts of the whole game. I cannot count how many times i failed it.

That water level in Rayman on PS1 where you have to jump across the floating balls, avoiding the jumping fish. Horrible, horrible level.
In fact, practically any level once you finish the forest.

"Crazy Convoy" missions in OutRun2/2006. "Drive 25 miles in 5 minutes without crashing into the MILLIONS OF TRUCKS EVERYWHERE".

Also any escort mission.

Super Mario Galaxy 2: There's a rather crappy stretch of that game that surpasses Wind Waker's infamous triforce quest in terms of pure annoyance and cheap and lazy game design, I won't be specific 'cos many people haven't played it yet or wish to play it later. It's not bad first time round but I haven't got the patience for it on a second playthrough.

Okami (Wii): The motion controls in that game were pretty good apart from the part where you have to help Mr Orange with his dance by circling blossom on the tree. I kept having to re-do it and you couldn't skip the f*****g cut-scene!

Castlevania IV: The boss in the posh dining room where you have to fight that dancing couple that are intent on crashing into you during their walzting for some odd reason. I even knew at the time that it wasn't a tough boss, I was just playing terribly, like slamming Classic Controller on couch and being shouted at by wife for being pathetic  Luckily there was an extra life hidden behind a wall just before the boss, so I could just die repetitively :D

Ha! Yeah that was a pain in the arse and took me ages. To add insult to injury a mate got to the same section and went through it first time in 5 mins!

The very first room on the very first level of He-Man on the ps2, absolutely no clues given as to how to open the cell door that gives you access to the key to escape the dungeon.

Also Asterix on the PS1 the first level involves you have to slap a minimum of 75 out of 90 fish thrown at random, to progress, No explanation is given for this.

Seriously some games designers need to be shot, what are they thinking!?

The circus levels near the end of Billy Hatcher & The Giant Egg are just plain evil. I've never been able to beat them - the design is so poor and cheap. It's maddening because up until that point it's a really fun 3D platformer.
