Other than the ones on the OP's list I'd say:
MK Kids - Bit of a Mario rip-off, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Definitely the best game ever based on a fast food franchise, that's for sure...seriously though, it's great fun and very underrated.
Megaman 2 - I still think this is the best ever Megaman game. It's total and utter fun. Very challenging, but rarely unfairly. Platforming brilliance.
Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers - I prefer this to Ducktales, though that's possibly down to reasons of nostalgia. Brilliant co-op play.
Rainbow Islands - Great conversion of the game, and although I'd say the Amiga version is my favorite this is still exceptionally good.
Rodland - Probably gonna be a bit pricey on eBay, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye out for.
Bucky O'Hare - VERY difficult, but brilliant fun. Loved the cartoon as a child, love the game even now.
Lemmings - Lemmings is great on almost any system, the Nes is no exception.
Startropics - I prefer this to the NES Zelda, though I seem to be in a vast minority,..
Dr Mario - I love Dr Mario! It's possibly better suited to handheld consoles, but sod it, I'm including it anyway.
Kirby's Adventure - I also love Kirby's Adventure, as short and simplistic as it is. Looks beautiful on the NES, and it's good fun. Really easy though, so maybe avoid if you're looking for a hardcore challenge.

It's called MC Kids, but yeah, good one! Think it was the first NES game I ever played (either that or Turtles), on a next-door-neighbor's machine.
Not as good as Global Gladiators, but about on par with Treasure Land Adventure. It's got the bits where you go upside down, and the weird blocks that send you spinning all the way back to the start of the level, and those weird bears... Yeah, it's a good one!

It was called McDonald Land here, if I remember rightly? But nobody seems to know it by that name apart from me. An eBay search confirms I'm right, and intriguingly offers up a Gameboy version that I wasn't aware of...anyone know if it's any good?

My favourite NES games (and there are many) are too numerous to list but here are the ones everyone should play and probably enjoy. Be sure to play NTSC versions as 50Hz PAL versions suck.
Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 (obviously)
Kirby Adventure (his best game in my opinion)
Mega Man 2 (also 4 is a personal favourite of mine)
Mighty Final Fight (a fun spoof port of the capcom arcade classic)
Jump N Bump (great old skool overhead racer)
Adventure Island 3 (fantastic platformer - wonderboy stylee)
Boulderdash (a fantastic port in it's own right)
Balloon Fight (classic arcade fun in the style of 'Joust')
Contra 1 + 2 (better than the arcade versions in my opinion)
Duck Tales (one of the greatest platformers ever, the sequel is great too)
Jackal (A superb port of the arcade game made better by relaxing the difficulty)
New Zealand Story (A great version)
Little Samson (Rare and very very good platform adventure)
Ufouria : the Saga (great Metroidvania game with fun characters)
Snake rattle & Roll (Epic isometric eat-em-up)
there are many many others but I had to stop otherwise the list would be about 50 games long.

A favorite of mine. It's a good RPG/puzzle game. Scared the sh** out of me when I was a young one. I still cannot play this alone.
Great (eerie) music, great story, and moderately challenging. You know what...I think I'll go ask my wife to sit next to me and plug this one in the old NES. It's been awhile.
Other underrated games I would highly recommend:
- Adventure Island 1, 2, and 3
- Adventures of Lolo 1, 2, 3
- Marble Madness
- The Adam's Family
- Jurassic Park
