I have alleyway, it is a good pick up and play thing, good luck doing all 100 levels though.

Alleyway, Revenge of the Gator and Solar Striker were pretty early GB games, and a bit crude imo.
Kirby's Blockball, Pokemon Pinball and Nemesis 2 would be my choices for affordable games in the same genres.

Mario Land 1 & 2
Turtles 1, 2 and 3 - all were fantastic
Operation C
Metal Gear Solid (Or Ghost Babel as it was called in Japan)
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal
Donkey Kong Land 1, 2 and 3

Never leave home without the above when I had my gameboy :D

Doneky Kong on GB is hands down THE BEST version of Donkey Kong. Ever. Not just a must own GB game but a must own game.

Good shout, wasnt into puzzle games back in the 90's but i saw this game and bought it, plays very well

The other game i really loved on the Gameboy (Okay apart from SM I, Gradius I and II and Operation C) was Batman. It was practically a clone of Super Mario Land I (When they used small graphics not horrible larger ones) with some nice different stages of shooting etc.

Great game

Geeky fact - Dragons Lair - Yep i never thought we would see the laser disc version but its basically a clone of Rollercoaster on the Speccy.

Megaman 1, 3-5 for the Gameboy have always been favourites of mine on the handheld - they took the NES games and sucessfully adapted the look, sound and gameplay of the series onto the small screen. Just a pity MM2 was a substandard release in comparison.

Other than that I've also got a soft spot for the original Batman game for the gameboy. Its a really fun platform game that I could play through again and again and not get bored of (not so much of a fan of the second game though).

Also when it came to the 3 Mario Land games I've always prefered Wario Land personally. I've always liked the wealth of hidden exits/areas that levels had, the nice large sprites, music and of course the many hidden treasures that could be collected for better endings.

Wario Blast was the first game I ever paid for using my own money. £14.99 was a lot of weeks' worth of pocket money back then. Good game, good times.
