Virtua Fighter.
Never really clicked with any other fighting game for some reason. The 3 button system seemed more accessible but eased you into the more complicated stuff.
I bought Virtua Fighter 5 for a fiver last week and have been enjoying it. The cheesy 1 liners haven't improved though

^My mind was stuck in 2D mode.
Virtua Fighter (Not the first 2 as they where a bit rubbish)

Re: Best beat em up series
I'd be tempted to pick the Street Fighter series, after all SF2 introduced me to the genre and Alpha 3 got me back into it big time after I had grown tired of it in the mid 90's.
Instead I'd have to pick Capcom's Marvel series - X-men COTA, MSH, and the Versus titles. The reason is that I'm a huge fan of Marvel Comics and loved what they did with the properties. The first 2 games (X-men and MSH) especially are favourites of mine with huge chunky sprites that (at the time) were well animated and are highly addictive and capture the essence of the comics perfectly.
This continued with the Vs series but the other main draws were that they added the Tag Team gameplay element (which I love) and they added loads of characters from Street Fighter/other Capcom games to create some awesome character rosters. That and as things stand I've really been enjoying the hell out of MvC3 (even moreso than Super SFIV and I love that game).
A close second would either be the Real Bout series (RB1 and Special) and the KOF series (again, huge cast of characters crossing over from several games)

No surprise here... Capcom's Darkstalkers. Love it
Others favourites would have to be Soul Calibur, the Vs series and World Heroes.

Streetfighter 2 is not a beat 'em up its a fighting game, there is a difference

Guilty Gear for me.
Awesome character desgins, frantic combat and all to heavy metal soundtrack. Just wish it had an online feature and that i was better at it.
Some of the series additions have been a bit poor but the first, xx reload and accent core were all awesome.

I asked for orange. It gave me lemon lime!

If you're talking one-on-one fighters, I can't narrow it down to one:
Street Fighter (II-IV and the Alphas, can't possibly lump in the original)
Tekken (although maybe not 4)
King of Fighters
Soul Blade/Calibur
Bloody Roar (under-rated and under-appreciated)

Virtua Fighter and it's not even close, way ahead of everything else.

Re: Best beat em up series
I guess the answer kind of depends on if you define "beat 'em up" as the one/two player versus many (i.e. Double Dragon) or one-on-one fighting (i.e. Street Fighter II). Personally, I believe it's the former, which makes it easy to respond:
BARE KNUCKLE!!! (aka Streets of Rage)

Re: Best beat em up series
No hes easy.
He falls into a routine in Alpha 3 thats easy to predict
When he crouches hes going to do his fireballthingy
Up close he will do his flip kick/hardkick
If he comes towards it will be a throw
If the punch version of his head kick while on full its this...

(Blocking is the only way to not take the full force then move back and attack)

Damn I hate that Mega Psycho Crusher. I can kill him easily with somebody like Akuma but slow types like R.Mika I'm useless with when it comes to Bison.

Re: Best beat em up series
I can beat him with almost all charaters.
Even Dan
I like to jump taunt over his fireballs.
And any fireballs
I just like to Jump taunt as its annoying
