Zaxxon in the arcade. A true ground breaker in gaming at the time and still terrific fun today.
HADDOCKEN!

Re: For the forum issue 86
Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters. It also has the best name of any isometric game!
Re: For the forum issue 86
Pacmania - When you were backed into a corner, it was nice to be able to get out of a jam by jumping over the ghosts' heads.
I always found isometric games too fiddly though, give me 2D everytime!

The original X-Com, although Breach 2 (with the level designer) was really cool too.
Re: For the forum issue 86
Fairlight on Spectrum for me by a long shot. As stated earlier, the world (for it's time of release) was extremely immersive and it was very easy to lose track of real time whilst playing - which is one of the signs of a good game to me. If I recall correctly there was a big fuss about it being the first(?) game to use an onscreen loading counter??

Sonic 3D on the Mega Drive for me as well. I always felt this game got a bad deal. Though it never amazes, it's a graphical beast on Mega Drive, and platform fans should be more pleased with it than later games like Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic and The Black Knight. So why all the hate?

Re: For the forum issue 86
It's got to be Fairlight for me. 3D rooms that weren't laid out on an obvious square grid gave it a bit more realism than the other isometric games out there at the time.

Tough choice. I do, though, have to plump for Quazatron on the 48K Spectrum. Possibly the humble machine's greatest musical achievement with the game's intro screen, and a brilliant slant on the C64's legendary Paradroid. Spectrum gaming at its very best!

Much as I love Head Over Heels, I'd have to say Landstalker on the Megadrive is my favourite.

I'm going to have two, just because I'm so great
Crusader: No Remorse - Cross an Imperial Guard with an attitude problem with shed loads of laser guns and you've got this. Shame the follow up wasn't released on teh Saturn as well.
Zaxxon - Mainly because it's brilliant.....and quite easy to crash into walls from the off, which is what I excel at

Dammit, all this talk of Zaxxon reminds me that I didn't mention Viewpoint, which is Zaxxon, but good.

The Adventures Of Robin Hood on the Amiga. Rob the rich and give to the poor, recapture your castle and get the girl ; or shoot everyone and keep the cash for yourself- it's entirely up to you! A great sandbox game with so much to see and do.

'Landstalker' on the Megadrive for me - a huge and gorgeous-looking isometric adventure/RPG. Very simple to pick up and get used to, highly addictive right from the off with great characters and dialogue, and becomes very challenging indeed on the later stages.

When you think you've got problems you don't really need,
They're maybe not as bad as they seem,
Cos in a world full of misery, with hatred and greed,
Your problems are another man's dream.

Fallout 2 for me. The depth of the world created, the amount of things you can do, and how customizable everything is makes for a game that I keep coming back to even now in 2011. It has some of the most replay value I've felt in any game. It surely improved immensely on the original.

I was going to say Viewpoint to be clever, but really it's the Bitmap Bros Cadaver.
Viewpoint was a fling, Cadaver was my university girlfriend.
