Re: New Vs Old Metroid
Waiting for mine to arrive but it would be very hard to top Super Metroid, especially now that Samus has apparently become an emo girl who needs "permission" to use her gear.
Re: New Vs Old Metroid
Nothing will ever top Super Metroid. That game is the perfect mix of gameplay and atmosphere.

Re: New Vs Old Metroid
Yeah, Super Metroid should win this one hands down. It's everything the original Metroid could have been, given the more powerful hardware of the SNES to run it on, and then some.
Other M isn't terrible, but it's precisely the sort of cinematic experience interspersed with occasional moments of gameplay that Nintendo haven't made in the past and quite why they've succumbed to the temptation still escapes me. I can only guess that they felt that the Wii was lacking a bit in eye candy and tried to overcompensate by cramming it all into the one game. Super Paper Mario cops a lot of flak for its occasional bits of drawn out plot, but Other M is at least ten times more guilty and less entertaining with it.

Re: New Vs Old Metroid
Bit of a cheat as I voted for Metroid without having played other M, but without the benefit of a time machine, there's no way Other M can eclipse the original.
Even if its brilliant it doesn't stand a chance of being as great as SM was compared to other games in the genre back when it was released.
And I agree with Timothy, Metroid, like Castlevania has 2D genetics, anything else isn't a Metroid game, whatever they stick on the box.

Super Metroid without a doubt. Another favourite SNES game which was absolutely immersive and the innovation was built upon that.

It's still too early to compare the series' standard-bearer to its newest entry, especially in Retro Gamer. Other M should plead no contest.
Re: New Vs Old Metroid
Super, definitely. Other M is good, and manages to switch Super Metroid into 3d quite well, but it's just not as good.

There's absolutely no comparison, Super Metroid wins this one by a landslide. That's coming from an absolutely huge Metroid fan.

Super Metroid is a SNES classic, only time will tell if Metroid: Other M will get the same legendary status on the Wii!
Re: New Vs Old Metroid
Much like the article in this months magazine, I think the best Metroid is Zero Mission on the GBA. It's the only one I've completed.
Re: New Vs Old Metroid
The 3D Metroid titles are games "I just don't get"!
Super Metroid, however, is one of the best video games of all time IMHO.
It's one of those 'perfect' Nintendo titles. Graphics, sound, gameplay - all spot on.
