the music from the spectrum port of doom is actually quite good
some of the best 8 bit music i have heard

I agree, a cartridge which put many Playstation discs to shame. Then again, it was a gold cartridge :lol: .

I was also impressed with Twighlight Princess on the Gamecube, they squeazed every last drop out of the Gamecube's potential for that one, a fitting way end to a great little console.

I remeber seeing impressive screen shots before LOZ:TP came out, thinking "oh, that'll just be the cutscenes" and they turned out to be actual gameplay! :D

I'm well happy I got the Gamecube version over the Wii as I believe they're graphically identical.

Hopefully I won't get too much grief - but "Black" on PS2 seemed to push it graphics wise

Doom3 on xbox seemed to punching above it's weight in the looks department.

i think a lot of incredible things happened on the spectrum considering the paltry size limitations. Stuff like Skool Daze and Dragontorc were pretty incredible considering they were shoehorned into 48k.

Did I mention Toy Story on the megadrive? Pre-rendered graphics, mock 3D on most levels, plus great driving/Doom stages. Incredible.

I disagree. Black is a quality title, one that's crying out for a proper sequel. I remember it mostly for the very first level - the door is locked. I have a shotgun. How do you open the door? No farcing around trying to find keys - simply blow the f**ker open. That was the beauty of Black - get a rocket launcher, blow a hole in a building instead of opening the door. Also the Ai didn't automatically know where you are - I hate it on FPS games when you fire a sniper shot at someone miles away and suddenly the enemy all know exactly where you are even though they couldn't possibly have seen you. On Xbox Black is lovely looking as well - I played it the other day on my 360 and it's still great. Exceptional sound as well and atmosphere.

Codemasters are developing a title called Bodycount at the min which is designed by guy who did Black after leaving Criterion - spiritual successor maybe. Looking forward to it.

It is far better design that Call of Duty. No respawning enemies, no checkpoints every five mins. The levels are well thought out, epic but gameplay is the forefront over style. Only played it a few months ago for the first time, truly shames current games FPS games.

Smash TV (C64) - Absolutely amazing they got the whole game into a single load and it was a cracking conversion as well.

Chronos (Spectrum) - While the game itself was a decent Scramble clone, the music was brilliant - how Tim Follin manage to eke so much out of the speaker I'll never know.

Wolfenstein (PC) - My jaw dropped when I discovered that game with such stunning graphics would be capable of running on my 386sx - 16 - and it turned out to be a cracker of a game to boot!

Monster Maze (ZX81) - A 3d survival horror game on the ZX81 with great graphics and scary to play.

Yoshi's Island on the SNES was very impressive, although coming so late in the console's life it seems to get somewhat overlooked

I agree. I completed it on both PS2 and Xbox and it's a brilliant game. I love blowing the church tower up on the first level with the rocket launcher :lol: . Loud guns, thumping explosions, amazing graphics and convincing gameplay.

The platinum weapons cheat is awesome too. Hilarious doing a level with an infinite rocket launcher :lol:

Panzer Dragoon Saga - Showed how capable the Saturn was when in the right hands and one of the few games that looked as good as any on the PS.

Shenmue - Incredible ambition & attention to detail.

Final Fantasy XII - One of the best game worlds ever and brilliant music. Shame about the joke characters & storyline & lack of sidequests.

I didn't bother putting any games that had required ram expansions or games that were designed on expensive workstations like Donkey Kong Country.
The square is a great shape, and one that is criminally underused in modern game design. In the push to ever more granular, chaotic environments, games have lost sight of the simple pleasures of right angles and straight lines.

Jurassic Park for the SNES - Dolby surround, mouse support and FPS sections. All on the humble SNES.
