shmups
i dont like shmups
in fact i loath them
i find them annoying un fair horrific monsters that are far too difficult and infuriating and generally speaking i stay the hell away from them
especially the likes of r type or bullet hell games like dodonpachi and perfect cherry blossom which is like a firework display being sick
and i loath the one hit and your dead rule which is just plain ridicilous
and the mighty radient silvergun and ikaruga did nothing for me other then swear a lot
however having said that there are two shoot em ups i do actually like
and dust off from time to time and they are both on the same console go figure
darius gaiden not even a main series game its a side story with the mutant robo fish
and layer section also known as galactic attack and gunlock
i have no idea why i like those two just that i do
so which do you like ?

i'll play and enjoy any shoot 'em up, including the crap ones like Raptor, yes - but then again, i'm a masochist. =-)TwoHeadedBoy wrote:Ha! So you DO like Raptor!TMR wrote:All of them.snowkatt wrote:so which do you like ?
Re: shmups
Schmups seem to be made for anal & obsessive gamers that either enjoy owning something that had a print run of 6 copies and is only playable in Swahili or enjoy scoring systems that make as much sense as a zombie on a unicycle.
It doesn't matter how many I play, they all zoom way over my head. These Bullet Hell ones in particular are rubbish, it's just one gigantic memory test, once you figure out where to be you get a little bit futher, rinse and repeat. Boring or what?
I did enjoy Ikaruga for a while though, the flipping mechanic thing was genius

Don't start.

No C, it's a contraction of shoot 'em up.Rayne wrote:Schmups
Since i play them a fair bit and usually work on instinct rather than learning the bullet patterns, i'd have to go with the "what" option.Rayne wrote:It doesn't matter how many I play, they all zoom way over my head. These games evolved to keep up with the players, during the 1990's the majority of gamers went mental about 3D so the only people sticking with 2D shoot 'em ups were the shmuppets [1] who were already rather good at them and, since there were less blasters coming out, they spent their timetruly hammering a finite number of titles far more. The result was a feedback loop, the games got harder and the players got better. If more players had stuck with the 2D shooters instead this effect would at least have been watered down, so mainstream gamers abandoning the genre are at least partly to blame for what happened.
Something like Hydorah or Armalyte isn't bullet hell of course so there are still titles being produced with "oldschool" sensibilities (i'm considering it, my engine is perfectly capable of the job even if it's set up to do bullet hell at the moment) but most of the best developers (commercial and otherwise) are Japanese bullet hell fans themselves so the bulk of what is released now is going to be heavy on the projectiles.
[1] i adore that word... don't like the term "shmup" itself but "shmuppet" is so endearing for some reason. =-)
