They only make about 1 game a decade.

Because they manage to present the same old franchises multiple times, yet I still lap them up - so, reinvention, I guess.

I think it's the success that it had over the past few years. For example the game marketing from the mid 80s until now had been incredible.
New idealized characters such as Mario (who later became a mascot) is very memorable not just for the groundbreaking games, but the creativity that took the gaming scene to a new direction thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto.
When the Super Nintendo first came out in 1991, it really captured the attention worldwide. I was so impressed with the performance of the console that it provided so many good quality games.
I should not forget few titles that included the Mode 7 features. F-Zero, Pilotwing, and Super Mario Kart was brilliant.
