\"dodgiest\" game endings ever

Post by nwosteve » Tue Oct 03, 2006 8:00 am

Dunno if this has been doen before (there are so many topics on the forum) but thought it would be fun to name and, in some cases, shame game endings that were bad.

It could be that they were downright stupid, or that they were a surprise, or that they just made you laugh.

My fave? Silkworm. The credits say that the war was long and millions of people were killed. Then it says, "and the people saw the funny side." Crazy stuff.

I always find it amazing that in some games the intro has several hours of pre-rendered FMV, the actual game has many long FMV sequences and the ending constitues two words "The End".

Syndicate on the Amiga springs to mind.

No game in particular but Shumps where you just recycle back to the beggining are aweful. Sometimes I hadn't even realised what had happened and then all of a sudden its like - hey, haven't I done this already.

Not related but the ending of War of the Worlds both movie and book is just embarrasing. Its like the writer ran out of ideas - or time and then ***SPOLIER ALERT*** all the aliens died due to bad bacteria!!!! Come on man, a bit more effort!!!!!!!!!!!!

But thats the point of War of the Worlds - man fights back with all his amazing technology which does nothing, but ultimatley the tiny bacteria kill the aliens - kind of ironic.. anyway the film was different to the book and sucked in places.

Legend of Kage: the game has no ending and just loops round & round & round & round & round (etc.)

Gotta say there's nothing more frustrating than a game that loops.

The original Bomberman where he turns into Loderunner.

Or how about the end of Wario Land where Wario recovers the giant gold statue and then Mario makes his cameo by showing up in his helicopter and nicks the statue from him.

Err, you do realise this is a literary classic first published in 1898 and that the entire plot and its ending was hugely original for its day?

Its a victim of its own success, having been ripped off so often that you have been blinded to its brilliance :(

The ending didn't suck in the Atari 5200 400/800 versions though.

According to wiki
The Atari 5200 and 400/800 version of the game is divided into two very large levels. In the first, Harry's goal is to rescue Quickclaw and Rhonda, who are both lost deep within the caverns, with secondary goals being to collect the Raj Diamond and a specific mouse. Once he rescues both Quickclaw and Rhonda, Harry moves on to the second level, which features new enemies and a more intricate map design. The goals in this second level were to rescue your unnamed friend, pick up a hat, flute, and rope, then take them to an end screen where you could levitate the rope and escape the caverns along with your friends.
There's a map of the second level here http://mapy.atari8.info/p-r/pitfall22.png
