Arrived this morning had a quick flick through and looks like a great issue. I won't spoil it for others with a contents listing and cover scan, but will say that the cover is Gradius (Nemesis), as is the excellent Coin-op Capers feature. Off to read my copy now! :)

BRILLIANT! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Looking at the preview from last month, it looked like there wasn't much in it for me this issue. I can't wait to get home now. :D

EDIT: Ooops, I forgot about the ZX80 thing that I was excited about. Lovely. :D

Nice looking cover too.

No it wasn't, but Gradius has a far bigger reach. It's why we went with Contra instrad of Gryzor for the Contra cover.

Good stuff ! Mines just arrived

Really like the cover with Gradius. Interesting reading about what happened to the Speccy version which was shown in the mags ! Nice to see an old Gameboy classic game in there - Mario Land 2, 1992, blimey !

Never heard of 'Frenzy' i must admit. Havent played Mystical Ninja but i'll give it a go. Nice to see the ZX80 in there ! I wouldnt play any games on an emulator (if there is one ?) but should be an interesting read.

Why you must play: Flying Shark - Classic game, loved this on the Speccy and rightly so its number on the list !

Never heard of this D&D game either but again i'll give it a go.

Looking forward to reading the Fallout article

The interview with John Gibson looks good, classic coder. Specially the early ones, Zzoom and Stonkers !

Glad to see Stephen Crow interviewed, legend ! Durell interview next month looks great

Good mix for me this month, some articles dont interest me instantly flicking through but i'll give them a go.

Nice surprise getting it today

It's the rather spiffy sequel to Berzerk!, which was the main influence behind Robotron.

Alas, world brands won out. No Snickers and Opal Fruits either.

Shame - It's a UK mag writen by UK writers which is released in the UK first..

The Image would have still packed a punch with anyone who is interested in retrogaming, I never played Gradius, my local arcade had a Nemesis machine with a Nemesis marquee and I bought Nemesis for my home computer because the arcade version was so much fun.. When I opened the bag my magazine comes in I saw the Image first and thought "WOW what a great game" then saw the massive mistake (and it is a mistake, the game was never called Gradius over here) and felt I had been let down by my favourit magazine :(

@Darran - I did read it, still don't make your mistake right though, no matter how you try and cover it up with words ;)
Still, better than nothing I guess...

I have to agree with Opa-Opa here, it definitively was not called Gradius over here, only in the US and Japan, I only remember Nemesis™, only was able to cross match Gradius with Nemesis when it became available on the Snes on import back in 1991, I think you should make sure the research is done regarding European publication, or was this for your U.S. readership instead?, ahh still I'm sure it's a good read..when I pick it up tomorrow..

We deliberated on Nemesis/Gradius, but at the end of the day decided it made more sense to appeal to a brand that the average gamer would recognise. You can call it a mistake if you like but I'm confident I've made the right decision for the success of the magazine and at the end of the day that what's being an editor is all about.

For my part, I've only ever heard of Gradius. All the "modern" versions call it Gradius. MAME calls it Gradius. So I'm kissing Darran's bum :D

Never knew that ! (I did have just a flick through earlier), really want to read that article now, love hearing about sequels to classic games which may or may not have been as good.

Cheers

As for Gradius/Nemesis i only heard of Nemesis in the UK but with emulation/roms etc i realised it was Gradius the rest of the world. Yeah its a UK mag but i'm alright with the 'controversial' name. Trying to think of any other Snickers/Marathon examples when it comes to games. All the latest compilations are called Gradius though arent they ?
