Dosbox + abandonware games and shareware are good, plenty of great games. Plenty of doujin shmups around, some demos and some freeware - Blue Wish Ressurection plus is a good example.

Wesnoth, Nexuiz, Neverball, TORCS, Flight Gear, FreeCiv, etc.
