Greatest scrolling beat'em ups?

I hinted at this in the "favourite genre" thread, but I got no response, so I'm making a new thread to answer this question:
Which scrolling beat'em ups would you recommend?

I'm really a big fan of this genre, I'd love to add more titles of this kind to my collection, on any mainstream console (even current gen consoles)
3D beat'em ups are fine too (like Fighting Force or Urban Reign for instance).

I strongly recommend Mutation Nation on the Neo Geo and best of all Guardian Heroes on the Sega Saturn as I love these two scrolling Beat 'em up games very much. Guardian Heroes I love the most as I have never seen another game as brilliant as this.

Right... But there is such a wide choice of games when you're into retro gaming, it's quite useful to have this kind of topic...

I agree with you, TMNT 4 is great. I love TMNT 2 as well... which brings me to this question: what about TMNT 3?... I realise I do not know this game... Was it even released over here?

I checked ebay for Guardian Heroes...

That's one expensive game!...
If the game is as good as everyone says, I wouldn't mind spending a bit more, but still... it's bloody expensive!

I've recently been playing a lot of Battle Circuit (CPS-2) and it's a great, very overlooked game, definitely on par with AvP, with some neat features like Guardian Heroes style skill/stats upping. Plus the characters are ludicrously great, espceially the walking plant and the girl/ostrich combo!

For me the best by far is Aliens vs Predator (CPS2). It's an awesome game.

If you love scrolling beat 'em ups you simply must play this game, such a shame it never received a home port of any kind.

Love side scrolling beat em ups!

I would recommend:
Final Fight - Arcade only though
Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3
Double Dragon 1 and 2
The Punisher
Dynamite Dux
X Men
Both Turtles arcades
The Simpsons
Super Double Dragon (im serious, i liked this game!)

People have already mentioned quite a few that I enjoy, so here are some others....

Double Dragon Advance - I play this most through the GC GBA player with a Hori GC pad. This is one of my favorites.

Yakuza 1 & 2 -- They almost feel like Nekketsu / RCR on PS2.

Dynamite Cop and Zombies Revenge on DC

Sega Ages Dynamite Deka on PS2 -- includes both Arcade and Saturn versions.

Return of Double Dragon on SFC -- make sure to get this version (the SFC version) and not the U.S. release. I'm assuming the Euro release was the same as the U.S. one.

Bare Knuckle III

Double Dragon II on PCE SCD
