Mega Drive Shoot 'em ups

Post by jdanddiet » Fri Sep 12, 2008 9:18 am

Can anyone recommend me a good MD shoot 'em up?

I have Hellfire and Gynoug, they're ok, and I've played all those helicopter strike games as well as the Xenons. Are there any others out there that are decent...and cheap?

I've also played Thunderblade (which is naff) and Ranger X (which is ace)

A few suggestions from my collection:

Biohazard Battle
Darius II
Fire Shark
Gaiares
Granada

Some of these are Japan-only. All should be obtainable for under a tenner each, with Biohazard and Fire Shark being the cheapest.

Suprised you don't like Hellfire and Gynoug they are two of my favourites.

Other good ones to try
Truxton (very much like Fireshark but I think truxton is harder and better)
Thunderforce 3 or 4
Aero Blasters
Biohazard battle

+1 for Biohazard Battle.

Gynoug is my favourite MD blaster. The Thunderforce games are ace, but expensive.
Thoughts and prayers.

You can get a double disk Sol Feace/Silpheed for the Mega CD.

Quite a lot of shooting in there!

I'd forgotten Silpheed! That was brilliant, great soundtrack too!

Problem is I don't have the mega cd thingy anymore...

Sol Feace exists for the stock MD too in the form of Sol Deace, it only lacks the CD soundtrack. i'll register a couple of votes for the fantastic Thunderforce 3 and Thunderforce 4, as well as for Hellfire, Gaiares and add Zero Wing (all your base and so forth), Eliminate Down, Gley Lancer and Whip Rush as well since i loved the lot of 'em.

I have just bid on a fireshark and biohazard battle, which like witchfinder said seem to be the cheapest.

Darius II i'd like but seems to be jap only. Does anyone know if there was a european/us release?

Tapey, I like Hellfire and Gynoug, just played them both to death so just after some new blood.

And also how come every MD game is RARE! or R@RE! or, oh you get the idea....

It was also released under the title Sagaia (i believe that was at least the American title) so try searching for that.

I'll second this lot, esp Gaiares, Gley Lancer & Eliminate Down - great games. Gaiares might be the only one you'll get cheap though - and theyre all Japan import only apart from Gaires which had a US release which I picked up for a few quid a few years back.

Personally though I've never been a fan of the MS Thunderforces, although I liked V on Saturn . But that might just be because I suck at 'em. :)

Try Mega-Swiv a superb 'Traditional' vertical scrolling shooter, the follow-up to Silkworm I beleive.

Should be able to pick it up for a couple of quid.
