Retro Gamer Now X-rated

Post by Jonathon Saunders » Sat Apr 15, 2006 8:40 am

It seems as if retro gamer has now gone x-rate with ads in the latest issue for sex lines. Dont they realise that kids as well as aduts read this magazine and some kids may be tempted to even ring the numbers out of curiosity.

These ads are always on after midnight on the tv so why then put them in a magazine that all ages can get access to. It just seems sad to me that a magazine like retro gamer has to resort to put these ads in just to rake in some extra cash.

I agree, it does cheapen the magazine, although these ads seem to be everywhere. :(

Mags have to have ads
There's not many companies prepared to advertise in a retro mag
(it seems they think we don't buy new games)

Therefore this only leaves these kind of companies
(after all ,because we like gaming, that means we never leave our bedrooms doesn't it?)

It's sad but it was inevitable

I cant agree with this. Games tm has these adverts as well and there are plenty of "new game" buyers who read that. These ad's are a cheap and quick way of making more money and are wrong..
I dont think the people who sell the advertising space care about who might see them, as long as the cash keeps coming in and they reach their sales target for the month. I hope if enough of us let our feelings known then they will stop printing these porographic images but we all know that won't happen.
I'm no prude but everything has it's place and RG is not really the place for porn..

I can't agree more. Retro Gamer is about games not porn. Maybe next month they could do a feature about the sex games available for the commodore64 if they think thats ok.

Come on Retro Gamer your not getting that cheap and tatty are you

Looks like I'll have to stop writing that review of Sex Bomb Bunny for the MSX.

I'm sure the editor and writers are just as ashamed/unhappy about this
And have just as little power in stopping it as we have

Completely agree.

Although it is largely the case that the editorial team will have no say or control over what ads run in the mag since its dealt with entirely seperately, but it is completely inappropriate in any kind of magazine that isn't directly and specifically aimed at a purely adult market.

They wouldn't be allowed to peddle this kind of thing on TV before 9 o clock so I don't understand the difference in allowing it in magazines that will be routinely available and read by under 18's.

Its a gap in the regulations that will undoubtedly be closed eventually but not before enough people, make enough fuss about it.

They always appear hidden away at the back of the mag,as though they're ashamed to be there

Yup, the editorial team isn't happy about the ads either (alright, I'm not happy about the ads). But I have no control over them at all. I don't even know what ads are in the magazine until it reaches the final stage of production, and by then it's too late. I can certainly request that they aren't used in the future as they do cheapen the mag (and cost a small fortune).

being retro i imagine the majority of people reading it ARE adults, there might be the odd kid reading it but tbh i think were mostly over 18, i barely look at the ads anyway, well apart from "those ads" lol :)

That equates to virtually every other magazine out there then. It seems that as long as there is justifiable reason to place this type of article in publications, it's "stuff everybody" regardless of their age.

I think we all know it's all about money at the end of the day.

Yep, I agree with everything that's being said. I've noticed over the years that the ads in gaming magazines have gone in this direction. I suspect that for, say, the Official PlayStation 2 Magazine this sort of advertising might hit its target audience (i.e. teen/twenty-something (single?) males). Considering the number of young teenagers who probably read these magazines the whole thing seems incredibly unethical anyway.

The ads are worse in the more mainstream gaming mags but it's always a shame to see this type of advertising in RG. I don't like it at all - and it seems that most of us feel the same.

Still, it's about time for an article on 'Custer's Revenge' isn't it?

Theres a few under 18's that post on this forum and it's not just the people who buy the magazine that read the magazine, my 12 year old really looks foward to reading my copy as I am sure other peoples children do.
Oh-well as has been said I'm sure the loop hole will be closed soon seeing as they are already saying that lads mag's (not porn) should be placed on the top shelf and have "modesty" covers placed over them...
