Kirk or Picard - which would YOU choose at the helm of the Enterprise?

A difficult choice - Picard is the more diplomatic of the two , but Kirk is the craftier . Kirk can let his emotions get the better of him , so for a cold calculated decision , I guess it has to be Picard

In fairness I'm also a big fan of Picard too.

I think there should also be options for Sisko and Janeway, who are also great commanders in their own right.

Captain Archer is a different story altogether...don't get me started...

I always tjought it would be interesting to see how Kirk would have dealt with the Borg

Another reason I prefer Picard to Kirk is that the latter is far more of a fantasy character. Whereas in the episode where Picard is tortured , and close to breakdown , and is only rescued at the last thanks to outside intervention , Kirk would have somehow turned the tables on his torturer and fought his way back to the Enterprise - far more entertaining perhaps , but far less realistic. Another reason why I prefer the more serious action of TNG to the more 'fun' original series.

Having said that , Kirk was perhaps a character of the '60s . By the time the films started to be released some 10 or more years later , the character of Kirk was very dissimilar to that portrayed in the tv series.
With the possible exception of IV , much of the humour and womanising prevalent in the '60 Kirk had been replaced with a more serious character

They are both great captains with their own strengths and weaknesses...

It would have been interesting to see the cancelled Star Trek Phase II, with Kirk confined to the bridge more and the second in command (the character that became Will Decker in Star Trek The Motion Picture) going on away missions (which is how Will Riker's role became in TNG)

A very valid view. Although they increasingly sucked alot of that fun out of the franchise by bogging it down with it's own mythology (you know who you are Enterprise). Even alot of Star Trek fanboys (like me) who knew all of the back stories didn't enjoy Enterprise because of it's unrelenting tedium (although Jeffrey Coombs' character Shran enlivened proceedings occasionally and Dr Phlox was a great character).

What Star Trek needs right now is a series that can recapture the fun and adventure of the original series whilst incorporating the 'human element' of the stories from TNG (the Picard - Cardassian interrogation story you refer to is a prime example).
