Best SSI Fantasy RPG's
Just wondering what everyone's fav was. I remember reading about the famous "Gold Box" SSI games but I never played any of them. I did play Eye of the Beholder 3 but wasn't overly impressed with it. Lands of Lore was much better but it wasn't a SSI game.
Eye of the Beholders One and Two were [apparently] much better than EotB3. I only played the first two but I read at the time that by the third one the genre was running out of steam.
I'm not sure about the other ones; Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades etc. Certainly Amiga Power panned them but, well, on occasion that's what you'd expect from AP

Phantasie I and II ('87 ish) were even better RPG's than the early Ultima series.

The SSI war games were top notch too.

one of the only ssi titles i played right to the end was MENZOBERRANZAN. i remember at the time reading reviews slating it - that at one point you simply could go no further. i remember that point and stumbling upon a hidden key hole on a random obscure wall - it would be so difficult to find but somehow i found it and played to the end. great memories!
EOB 1 and 2 were excellent and I prefer them to Dungeon Master, purely because of the D&D setting and character creation system. Haven't played 3, but I'd heard the same as everyone else - i.e. it's not made by Westwood and it sucks.
For the same reasons I really like the SSI games based on the D&D rules (including the Buck Rogers games). They're all great, but like russgalleywood I would go for the Krynn games because I too love the Dragonlance books.
I'm surprised that they got panned by AP because Stuart Campbell is such a huge fan of RPGs. In fact, I reckon we should all PM him asking him to do a 'Definitive Guide To' the SSI D&D games. I think he'd enjoy it.

How silly of me!
Time to do some research, I think.
EDIT:
After a quick squizzepedia I see that Buck Rogers was an SSI game. The Megadrive version ate many hours of me and my mate's lives. I loved the way you could team up with some alien species (if you could sweet-talk them right).
Interesting to note Flashback is on the list, too. I think SSI were responsible for the American DOS version.

Countdown to Doomsday is one of my favourite Megadrive games too. It's very different from the computer versions though - not nearly as stat-heavy.StickHead wrote: After a quick squizzepedia I see that Buck Rogers was an SSI game. Why retro? Because you never forget your first love.
