Retro Gamer - Issue 203

Post by RichL » Sat Jan 18, 2020 7:03 am

Various 2D Mario sprites on the subs cover.

Articles (without giving them all away)

Mario 2D games (obvs!!)
Superfrog classic moments;
Makings of Nosferatu the Vampire, Full Tilt Pinball, Crackpots, Stormlord II;
Pushing The Limits - Street Fighter Alpha;
Stefano Arnhold is in the chair.

Lots of other stuff as well, like I said not giving it all away.

More Mario articles? Is there anything else to tell? Issues with Mario, Zelda, Sonic and the sorts on the cover are the ones that make me save my money, unless there is an article I really want to read.

I feel a bit like this, but I'm sure there's a ton of people that think that when there's "another" Matt Smith Manic Miner/Jet Set Willy article, and yet I love that stuff. Swings and roundabouts as they say :)

Indeed, I feel Matthew Smith and Manic Miner has been done to death now. But I love Mario, and welcome more if there is something new to it. :shock:

Speaking of Matthew Smith, it's eerie how much he looks like me at the same age. I have pics of me at the same age home at my mum's that is virtually indistinguishable. My digital images have not the same picture, but look at him here:

And then look at me age 17 here:

I swear, I have an image of me somewhere with the same expression Smith has in the image above, it's really freaky.

If anything it was the "Strike" series article that made me say "not again" - but there were some interesting insights. I had no problem with the Mario piece.

Get your point but I presume these sell well so if it helps the mag I don’t mind the odd mario one.

My old thought about the use of swear words rears it’s head again.

In the Strike article, it’s telling you to go and find out what SNAFU means on the internet (indicating you don’t want to type / use the word f*** in the article) yet last month in the chair (or one of the recent ones) mentions the F word in the text.

You need to decide if you are treating your readers as adults or not and stick to it.

Having stated earlier in this thread that was disappointed there was another Mario article, I have since read it and enjoyed it a lot. Just need to remind myself that I should always read the things before commenting on them!

One niggle in this issue though. The Marble Madness article starts out by explaining Atari's financial woes in 83/84 and how subsequently the company was split into two divisions (Arcade & Home Consumer). It then states that the latter division was sold to Commodore, which is clearly incorrect as it was actually sold to Jack Tramiel. He'd been ousted from Commodore after a fallout with chairman Irving Gould 6 approx. months earlier.

Mario articles, yawn. At least no "free" gift that's completely unwanted this issue. Well done for showing restraint

^Senzer feedback - yawn

Yeah the Mario article was better than i thought as i thought it 'may' have been much of the same. As ely says i really enjoyed it. Really enjoyed the Stormlord II article and the Spectrum Next feature. The Marble Madness article gave me some great nostalgic memories as well

I found the Mario article interesting enough, over all this is a great issue with plenty of true retro stuff in it. I have no interest in anything beyond the turn of the millennium as it is all the same from then on, only the earlier stuff looks more jagged around the edge due to lower resolution.
