From the Forum - Issue 199: Shareware

Post by NickThorpe » Wed Sep 11, 2019 5:25 pm

Well, [press] my [trousers] and call me [Reginald], we're doing issue 199! And you know what that means - that's right, it's the one hundred and ninety-ninth issue of Retro Gamer. But before we get to issue 200 and all the festivities, it's time for me to dip my spoon into your collective jar of mental honey. So here's a question:

What was your favourite shareware game back in the Nineties, and why?

As usual, a shadowy cabal will choose a number of answers for publication in the magazine, based on unpublished and inexplicable criteria.

It has to be something I still play to this day... Deluxe Galaga - Amiga by Edgar Vigdal. (it's still available as Warblade on iPhone and other systems).

And on the PC - Scorched Earth. I'm still playing Pocket Tanks on PC & iPhone!

Must be Llamatron. I think I paid for it - I know I paid for several of Jeff's games.

Got to be Doom. Predictable choice, yes.... but.... DOOM.

Uh...yes. Doom by a landslide. I agree, it's probably still my all time favourite game, providing the illusion of a 3D world and pure blasting fun

I wish I could remember what it was called. It was a Missile Command clone & it was the greatest version of Missile Command I've ever played...but I've never been able to find it since!

Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle - the first time we had a truly great platformer on PCs - the original trilogy were good, but this was when id Software started touching greatness.

For me, I cannot be any other game than Commander Keen 4. That game or Super Mario Bros. 3 was my first ever videogame, both came to my attention at the same time - around age four. I still play it yearly to this day. It's just so good!
