These are all great suggestions, cheers.

The wife's picked it up for me today & sent a pic, it looks like whoever owned it before was a HUGE platformer fan, there's Cool Spot, Sonic 2, Castle of Illusion & about half a dozen other platformers. Should keep me going for a bit while I look for some of the above suggestions on ebay & the like. :D

Lack of love for the Master System version of Speedball 2.

I'd argue that the SMS port of Double Dragon is the best of all the 8-bit versions.

As a Speedball 2 nut, the only versions that are worth playing IMO is the definitive Amiga version, and the Megadrive port. (not counting the Xbox Live Arcade one, which was basically the Amiga one with some extras that didn't add much to the experience).

The 8-bit ports I found a bit disappointing and a compromise a bit too far. I recently tried the PSP mini of Speedball 2 Evolution (although couldn't get it to work on my PSP for some reason, so downloaded it on the PS3 PSN store for a couple of quid), but that also feels "off".

To compliment the games I got with it, I picked up a few more in that shop in Manchester that's closing down, managed to get
Speedball 1 & 2 & have change of a fiver!

Man there's a LOT of flickery platform games on this thing!

Most of the best games I've got seem to be valiant attempts to replicate Megadrive games on limited hardware.

Lots of fun, but TBH playing through all the games has just made me pine for my old Megadrive,

A PAL Master System really suffers from the 50hz slow down if you ask me.
Even decent games like Rastan and Lucky Dime Caper feel extremely sluggish. I don't know why it seems more noticable on the Master System than on other systems - I guess the games must have just been a bit slower to begin with.
Having said that, Enduro Racer and New Zealand Stroy are still decent and I have a soft spot for Time Soldiers. The light phaser is pretty good so if you like light gun games try Rescue Mission (a cool little game where you provide covering fire for army medics on railway carts) and the Master System port of Operation Wolf.

Bank Panic. I have this on cart (and the arcade board), but I'd still quite like the card version, there's something very appealing about that format.
ms cards are great, I have the full set

I've been snapping up cheap carts where I can find them. 2 games that are WAY more fun than they have any right to be are Teddy Boy & The Ninja. 2 perfect examples of why I love retro gaming, cheap as hell, no fancy gimmicks, just pure arcade fun.

I'd second that. Superb version.

Building up quite a collection now, it's amazing how cheap you can pick up a lot of the carts for on Ebay.

The first of those especially is a great example of the hell of an Indian Summer the Master System had in 1993/4. By rights it should all have been shovelware cheap crap given the Mega Drive was 3 years old at that point. But instead there's a run of bloody superb games. Cool Spot is one, but also the Jungle Book (before the mega drive version), Sonic Chaos, Cheese Cat-Astrophe, Aladdin (not a mega drive conversion) and several others.
