Here's an old fave that became the title of a BBC show focused on it's genre:

Loving Richard Ashcrofts most recent output at the moment.

Are you quite young ? There’s some total crap on that list. Olly Murs, Cheryl, Little Mix etc. Urrrrgh. Reads like a Now that’s what I call music album ! Way too much pop stuff on it

How singers like Olly Murs are that popular is depressing as anything

I'd think it good if you can still listen to contemporary pop music and find stuff you like, because most of us have our taste pretty much set in stone by the time we reach thirty and our absolute favourites are usually what we listened to in our early teens.

Anyway, I guess here is as good a place as any for me to list my top albums of the last year:

Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
Black Moth - Anatomical Venus
Behemoth - I Love You At Your Darkest
Halestorm - Vicious
Jeff Martin - Stars in the Sand
Judas Priest - Firepower
Ministry - AmeriKKKant
Opeth - Garden of the Titans
Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs
Voivod - The Wake

I know it should be 'about' the music but if theres a song and i think 'thats not too bad' then i realise its by Olly Murs feat Robbie Williams also 'feat' Ariana Grande then i would turn it off and think 'urrrgh'. Things like X Factor Pop Idol type stuff has ruined the charts, before that we used to have TOTP and some decent tunes, now its just the same old rubbish in the charts

Also i'm older, an Olly Murs song aimed at 16 year olds just isnt my thing so as you say my taste in music is pretty much set in stone. Used to be a Muse fan (loved the first album) and the next couple were okay but gone off them a bit. But i can appreciate any band who writes their own music and performs live

That you like the music then dismiss it once you find out who it is says a lot about you...

Most of Elvis' music was written by other people, same with many other huge stars. Would you dismiss those? Robbie Williams et al are essentially the same thing, they put on a good show though they may not write the music. And what of the likes of Take That? Write their own songs and do huge live performances, can we assume you're a fan?

X Factor didn't ruin the charts. Competitions like this have always been popular, it used to be New Faces and Opportunity Knocks. There's always been a majority of crap in the charts, but time lets us only remember the good stuff. Look at disco for example. Sounds of my youth, but most of it is pop pap. Then you get Donna Summer churning out I Feel Love and with that beat and vocals and its a classic.

Well, eclectic is a word to describe my tastes.

My Top 5 favourite albums in no particular order:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9liRgX ... 8CDB049C99 - Captain Beefheart - Shiny Beast
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayUqmla ... fNw4dUjtAP - Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ceVq2v ... 6f&index=2 - Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK4T8Hn ... uyAG9XRc4R - It Bites - Once Around The World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxIM312iBWU - Joe Satriani - The Extremist

Imho, five superlative albums worthy of anyone's time and effort. Sure, Zappa and The Captain will be difficult listens to the uninitiated, but given time they are fully appreciable. Bites and Joe are rather more mainstream and showcase each artist at the top of their game. (The track orders on ytube for them all are not accurate, with also the odd missing track in the side panel choices.)

My current roster of album listens:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be2cdHc ... 535DB09ECA - Therion - Vovin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCnn7WE ... 47C3CBCFF9 - Stratovarius - Elements Pt1 [This album is vying with Joe for a place in my Top 5!]
[can't find this on youtube] - Tomoyasu Hotei - Guitarhythm V
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q0cvguZRNE - Tiffany - The Colour of Silence [can't find the full album on ytube]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFK2X4eodnw - The Toy Dolls - Absurd Dities [track 6 is worth the purchase alone!]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhcshGC ... WmZHnunhcE - The Montecristos - Born to Rock and Roll
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9iZY_EVoIQ&t=101s - Symfonia - In Paradisum

Therion were Death Metal but changed course, and as far as I am concerned for the better. Vovin was my first purchase of theirs, a great opening salvo. They are now Operatic Metal! And as for Stratovarius... Elements Pt1 is quite possibly not only the pinnacle of their oeuvre but of the Symphonic Rock genre itself. Quite marvellous. Symfonia's only release is also a solid entry to the same genre, crafted by the former leader of Strat, Timo Tolkki.

Guitarhythm V is Japan's 'living legend' of the music scene, Tomoyasu Hotei, at his eclectic best. Worth searching for!

Don't be fooled by the Tiffany listing - this album was critically lauded on release, but ignored by listeners just because it was Tiffany, all thinking it was more of the same. It isn't, it's a far more mature sound quite unlike anything she released before. You'll be pleasantly surprised! And I just had to buy the Toy Dolls album for Track 6 alone - love it!

The Montecristos is the new band for former Sigue Sigue Sputnik ax-man Neil X. Again, don't be fooled by the SSS reference - this is more olde school rock n roll, just modernised. The three SSS covers are exceptional!

Enjoy, all, and enjoy all! :D
