games where the original was best

Post by ncf1 » Fri Apr 06, 2018 8:06 pm

Games tend to be improved with sequels - well not always but with technology and skills being updated all the time its usually the case. But for me, some have never been beat - which originals do you think have not been bested?

For instance I reckon Wonderboy, Donkey Kong and Bubble Bobble were 3 that although had sequels couldn't touch the original. Galaga probably in there as well.

Whaddya reckon?

Galaga was a sequel! Galaxian is the original!

I would say Robocop, Outrun, Double Dragon, Tetris and Lemmings.

I think DK and DKJ are unique in that they are both superb, and it's hard to pick which is better IMO. Both better than DK3 but that itself is way different to the first two and fun enough to play :)

This is a good topic, off the top of my head I'd go Xevious is better than the follow ups. Many of the early arcade games had follow ups which were basically the same game with new makeup

Xevious 3DG is a better game than the original imo.

Jak and Daxter springs to mind, could not get into the sequels at all.

IMO DK Jr has more varied levels than the original, and the last "keys" level is (IMO) a textbook example of perfect level design: You move mostly along the Y axis and the enemies move mostly long the X axis giving the avoidance dynamic in the crossing of the paths.

Mafia, yes! What a gem that was.. I remember when the sequel finally came out and then waiting for III to finally patch things up but alas, the original remained vastly superior to both.

Donkey Kong for sure. I never rated any of the games that came after.

Renegade on the Speccy. People loved Target Renegade but it was insultingly easy and the less said about Renegade 3 the better, unless everything you say is a swear word.

Syndicate is a good shout. I didn't like Syndicate Wars at all. The FPS that they did last gen wasn't really a Syndicate game and wasn't very good.

Tenchu. The first game was perfect. Great story, felt totally original and it had levels that were just about right in terms of complexity and size. Everything afterwards was disappointing.

Chaos (Speccy). Lords of Chaos left me cold and I didn't much like the look of the recent-ish game.

Quazatron
This! I still don't understand how Steve Turner managed to make Magnetron so bad.
