Great cooperative games for 2 players simultaneously?

Post by demon » Sat Aug 05, 2017 6:40 pm

I am looking for suggestions on good retrogames that are playable by 2 players at the same time, but where players are on the same side instead of against each other. All genres allowed, although I would prefer to avoid fighting or battle games, since the players will be my children. My purpose is to let them play together instead of always taking turns

By the way, when I say "retro" I mean at least 20 years old 8)

Some easy choices would be Bubble Bobble, Mario Bros, and Silk Worm.

Bruce Lee on the C=64 can be played cooperatively, and despite the kung fu theme it's not really violent.

Any other suggestion?

Not 20 years old, but the Lego games are always good.... *Hides*

How about 'Zombies Ate My Neighbors' that's a good one for the Snes! Pretty certain it came out on the Megadrive also.

Probotector/Contra. Also a lot of older sports games like Smash Tennis or ISS Pro would allow 2 players to be on the same team

Pretty much any scrolling beat 'em up but especially those by Capcom (The Punisher, Captain Commando, AVP, Final Fight etc.), Double Dragon series, Streets of Rage series, Sengoku series and Konami games (TMNT, Asterix, X-men etc.)
Raiden
Aero Blasters
Forgotten Worlds
Bio Hazard Battle
Snow Bros.
Pit-Fighter
ISS
WWF Wrestlefest
Tempest 2000

Load more, but that's a good selection to start with :D

ISS Pro Evolution 2 was an amazing football game and I don't even like football that much, so there you go. Though, I think it's not exactly 20 years old yet, rather a couple of years or so away.

I'd suggest Snake, Rattle n Roll by Rare. It's available on NES or Megadrive and is also on the Rare Collection on Xbox One.

There's also Gauntlet in various versions on too many systems to mention. Gauntlet is combat but it's very tame monster slaying stuff.

Another vote for scrolling beat 'em ups here - Streets Of Rage, Final Fight and Golden Axe are just a few.

What about MAME? There's an absolute ton of co-op arcade games to mess around with - ideal if your kids are like mine and have the attention spans of goldfish!

Bloodwych - I've fond memories of this split screen 2 player RPG, which I played on C64. Decent spell list, 4 characters per party, plenty of floor puzzles, even trade & bartering with NPCs.

Excellent game for its time, never really found anything like it since.

Another decent 2 player co-op game is Wiz n Liz from Psygnostic, which I recall playing on the Megadrive. A charming game with wizards and rabbits, so depending on the ages of your children it might be visually quite appealing too. A few years ago they released an official free to play flash browser version too , but don't think its accessible anymore.

Is Sonic 2 over 20 years old? The 2P setup on that is quite good fun, unless whoever's playing Sonic decides to be a censored

If you go for shooters I'd recommend Parodius, as its bright and cheerful

Easily Rampage. Pretty awful in one player, it becomes awesome when a second player joins. Never played in 3 player so not sure how that goes. But the game is designed for multi-play, with some really fun stuff to do (tennis-tramcar anyone?). Plus you can punch your mate if they're doing your head in (plus EAT them if they turn back human!)

How did I forget Rampage?

One of the greatest multiplayer games ever.

Also see Xenophobe, same designer and also totally awesome.

I could swear there was a website with fully searchable information on every arcade coin-op game ever made including variants and bootlegs... and I was hoping it would also allow searches by number of players supported. I think it allowed other kinds of narrow searches such as by controls (e.g. spinner, trackball, double joystick...). But I could not find that website at all, damn me for not bookmarking it back then :( Anyone knows what website it could have been, and if it still exists?
