Grenfell Tower, London fire.

Post by dste » Wed Jun 14, 2017 4:53 am

More than 50 people have been taken to Hospital after the tower block went up in flames.

At the moment it has been declared safe for Firefighters to work in but could be the possibility of eventual collapse.

Devastating.

I was looking at this earlier on the BBC website myself and devastating is the right word for it.

I think the death count is going to be quite high judging my how serious it is :(

Terrible.

"Some residents said no fire alarms or sprinklers went off when the fire started.[1][18] Residents said they were alerted to the fire only by people screaming for help or knocks on the door and not by a fire alarm.[18] Others reported that they survived by ignoring the council's "stay put" policy, its directive instructing residents to remain in their flat in case of fire.[2]

The London-wide Radical Housing Network, a citizens' action "group of groups... fighting for housing justice across London"[20] of which the Grenfell Action Group is a member, said that the fire was "a horrific, preventable tragedy" that was the result of a "combination of government cuts, local authority mismanagement, and sheer contempt for council tenants and the homes they live in".[1]

"Stay put policy" - ? People were previously instructed to remain in their homes, in the FIRE?!

Same here, along with 'crawl below the smoke' and 'stop, drop, & roll' should you find yourself on fire. Also, it seems that every home with kids had at least one of these back in the day, I believe the program saved countless lives....

There is currently a 'go fund me' set up for those that wish to give. Currently at 23,000 pounds out of a 50,000 goal.

Cash is king, of course, but it's just a shame that I'm so far away; I've got plenty of spare clothing/blankets/dry goods/toiletries/tinned foods/bottled water/etc.

A terrible tragedy that apparently was easily preventable. :(

what is happening to london, terrorist attacks, tower blocks on fire, revenge attacks from the far right (last night). it wasn't that much of a distant memory when we had riots in the streets. my thoughts are with the people that live and work in the capital, it is a dangerous time to be alive, people are really on edge.
so sad to hear that this could have so easily been prevented, in 2017 tragedies like this should not be happening.

Blame cutbacks

Money rules the world and those with the most of it have the say in what gets spent, but they would rather not

Blame increasing divisions, fostering of a "them and us" mentality, fake news and stupid demands being spread on Twitter by people like Piers Morgan and Lilly Allen and the politicisation of this tragedy. This person got beaten up by protesters as he was wearing a suit and they thought he was Tory councillor, but he was a volunteer who'd been helping with the relief effort
