My copy arrived yesterday and it's brilliant, very reminiscent of the Valken series. Damn good fun
Hmm, that actually made its way to Steam earlier this year.

Speaking of Steam, has anyone here played Astebreed? I bought got it recently and it was amazingly impressive but very frenetic and confusing. It reminded me that when I was young my father told me that while he enjoyed watching me play shoot-'em-ups he couldn't play them because they were too fast for his reactions. Probably he was younger then than I am now. Maybe I am getting too old for shmups ...

I've mentioned Locomalito before, mostly for his amazing Hydorah.

He's got a new game out... I say new, it's been out for a while. It's called Gaurodan.

In it, you play an angry pterodactyl-esque creature who goes around burning everything to a crisp. Planes, helicopters, tanks, hospitals... all must fall to the mighty Gaurodan! It plays a lot like Choplifter, but without all the tedious landing and picking people up stuff. Give it a try... as with all Locomalito games, it's free!

Oh, I searched for it with no results, but apologies if it's been mentioned elsewhere.

Played and beat Raptor back in the day. Liked it a lot. Very classic gameplay. Liked Tyrian a lot as well, though I never beat it. Great graphics for the time.

Got the platinum on Caladrius Blaze on PS4. Probably one of my favourite shoot 'em ups now. Lots of difficulty options so it caters for shoot em up pros and also normal players like me.

recently got Sonic wings 2 on AES, it's cool - I really like some of the bosses (the first one looks really cool) and the multiple fighter planes, some of the backgrounds are a little bland, some are great. gameplay is tight and feels well balanced, It doesn't feel unfair. not sure if I prefer it over sonic wings special, but it's a close one.

just totting up my collection, I've discovered I've got about 150 shooters :) definitely my favourite genre.

the most surprising thing I found is I have more shooters on the SNES/super famicom than the Megadrive, the majority of which in my opinion are better games than the MD ones, even though the Snes is commonly seen as weak in this regard. Maybe there were just more shooters total released on MD?

the highest percentage of the 150 total is jap Saturn stuff with some truly awesome games (and some complete duffers)

and I have r-type on 3 different formats psone/360/pc engine. for some reason I like the pc engine one the most, even though it's a bit glitch graphically. I love the game but don't play it often, so having 3 versions is a bit overkill.

Yeah, I love the way you can mix and match weapons after clearing characters. Got back to playing Darius Burst Chronicles on PS4, and some of the missions are just beyond me! Still good fun though.
