Best PS2 games to play via PCSX2 emulator

Post by MattyC64c » Mon Sep 12, 2016 5:55 am

Hi,

I've recently started playing around with PlayStation 2 emulation and I was wondering, what do you think are best games to try out with this?

First things first, I'm not into playing PS2 fps games really, I just don't think they've aged too well. I'm more interested in Arcade type games.

So Far I've played Tekken 5, GranTurismo 4 and Ridge Racer 5.

It's certainly a tricky emulator to get running just right. The PS2's hardware isn't easy to emulate and requires a fair bit of hardware power to get going. I can play most games at 1080p at 60fps, with the occasional drops here and there.

Yes! My type of game, very arcade like. Seems to run well on PCSX2 as well according to YouTube. :D

Firefighter FD18 I think it's called.

Found it in cex a few years ago, had never heard of it so grabbed it for £2, played the first level , just to test it and it looked really fun, ps2 packed up slightly after though so never got a chance to give it a full go.

Seeing this post just reminded me as I now have a tv with a built in ps2, so going to dig it out again.

It might not be the best game, but the few minutes I played seemed fun for sure

Yakuza 1 and 2. Since the HD versions aren't getting released over here its the next best thing! Also the main bonus is that playing it emulated eliminates load times which plagued the originals on the PS2.

Tiger Woods 2003& 2005 work really well. Ico seems fine although it slows down during cut scenes.

Just gonna try GTA III to see how that runs..

What kind of processor do you need for it to be really fast, accurate and compatible? I assume its about CPU rather than GPU, or is it both?

A lot of PS2 games are available on PC natively so you may be able to use those games to supplement the ones that don't run so well through emulation.

Sky Odyssey
Gradius 5
R type Final

Are three decent titles that seem to run more or less spot on.

While I haven't actually played them, I'd deff. also go for these and I'd also add Contra: Shattered Soldier, Virtua Fighter IV Evolution, OutRun 2006 (although thisone is natively on PC), Burnout 3, We Love Katamari, Soul Calibur 2/3, Maximo, Viewtiful Joe 1/2 and SFIII Third Strike to the list of the Arcade gems of that console.

Here's the recommended configuration:

Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32bit or 64bit) with the latest DirectX.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.2 GHz or better OR i3/i5/i7 @ 2,8 GHz or better OR AMD Phenom II @ 3,2 GHz or better.
GPU: 8800gt or better (for Direct3D10 support)
RAM: 1GB on Linux/Windows XP, 2GB or more on Vista / Windows 7.

I'm running PCSX2 on a FX8350, 8GB RAM, GTX970 4GB and Windows 10. You probably could run it on a old Core 2 Duo, but with no up-scaling. It wouldn't look very nice though. Most of the video's about PCSX2 on YouTube were done using Corei5 and i7's, mine is an equivalent of a middle to lower end Corei5.

I'm very impressed with Tekken 5. It looks and plays rather well, with very quick loading.

I'm going to test out Burnout 3 at some stage (maybe today). I've seen it running on YouTube, but their system specs were somewhat higher than mine, I wonder if I'll get 60fps? I've already got Outrun 2 Coast to Coast on PC.

Splendid choices. Bought a PS2 to play Gradius 5 and RType Final. Sky Odyssey scratches the Pilotwings itch.

Few more:

SSX 3 - for some the best arcade snowboarding game.

NFS Hot Pursuit 2 - the PS2 version is different from the other versions and it is said it plays and feels better.

Star Wars: Racer Revenge - the N64/DC/PC version is said to be better, but the PS2 version has better visuals that look closer to the Arcade version.

X-Treme G3 - while it could be dubbed "the poor man's F-Zero GX", it's still a very solid futuristic arcade racer.

Of course these are all "pure" arcade games, as the TC requested.
