Having worked for them 20+ years, and being treated like a c*nt for at least half of those years, please let it be Currys / PC World (Dixons Carphone Group)

I've always thought the oddest shop on the high street was the various types of Army/Navy Surplus sort of stores. Catering nicely for the man who needs a steady supply of camouflage pants, sleeping bags and swiss army knives.

Oddest shop just off the high street was the trophy shop. Nip in, buy a trophy, get your shoe fixed, get a spare key cut, fit a new battery in your watch and might as well get a Mahjong set too while you're in there, why not?
Now that's one multi-tasking shop. Proof that diversity can't save your business in the face of the online shopping juggernaut.
Mr the beans I stand corrected. i'd forgotten about the army and navy shops - I haven't seen one for years mind.

i'll take super drug in the sweepstake!

Maplins simply sell stuff that can be obtained cheaper at ebay or amazon... I also feel that Matalan could be losing out to other high street chains...

Boots should be alright because they have a market of specialist toiletries and health/bathroom products that the supermarkets can't compete with (especially for women). Throw in the pharmacy, optician and convenience food/refreshments and they look fairly stable.

From a personal point of view, Boots is one of the first places I'll go for a bottle of mineral water because they're reasonably priced and almost always chilled properly.

Matalan will be safe. They are always rammed and they have a half decent website that does very well.

For me I'm shocked Boyes is still going as you walk in there and it feels like a time warp of a bygone era.

In the sweepstakes, I will go for HMV. How they survived is beyond me but with the decline in physical media sales, surely it can't be long before they tank again? Not a good thing really as I am a fan of physical media but I can see it happening.

Having said that, all of the HMV's in the local towns shut down and I'm not going to Birmingham city centre (next nearest store) so it won't actually affect me.
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

HMV again for me as above.

I went into the Crawley one at the weekend. £47.99 for Just Cause 3!

B&Q seem to be on the way out round here, three near me have closed down already and they weren't exactly dead shops. Closing down the nearest ones has forced me to become a Wickes customer now.
