Retro Gamer 150 - Your Greatest Games Ever!

Anyone spotted that the entry for Gauntlet shows the character images from Gauntlet II - the original character colours are swapped around..?

Overall I feel it was an OK issue. As a chart I thought it was a bit odd, seemingly made up from a lot of people who couldn't decide what era to pick their games from. I guess it gives a good snapshot of the readership, and is great info for planning the future of the mag, but as an article it struck me as a bit of a scattershot approach to gaming tastes. And it's not as though such a broad and popular survey is going to cast up anything you haven't heard about a dozen times before.

But mainly, I think it pushed aside a lot of other stuff that normally makes up the mag, and that might have been more interesting. It's not an issue I'll be picking up in future and flicking through for bits I might have missed, like I usually do a month or two later on.

Why does that matter? Era wasn't the premise, in fact the premise (Top 150 Games Ever) encourages you to consider games across all eras.

I dont agree with many of the games on the list (But i doubt if hardly any of us agree with lists) but i enjoyed going through and reading about the different games, some of which (modern-ish ones) i dont know much about.

I'm glad they did the list though as it was a 'special' issue. Yeah i missed the usual features etc but it was a special issue and something we wont see again till say issue 200. Be boring if issue 150 was just a normal issue so i'm glad things were a bit different. Cool cover as well

Got my issue in the post...really enjoying it. Happy for the usual features to take a backseat for one issue for the special occasion. Really fun to read issue...and excellent features to compliment the main list

Why does that matter? Era wasn't the premise, in fact the premise (Top 150 Games Ever) encourages you to consider games across all eras.

Exactly. We knew the vast majority of games were going to be from the 8 and 16-bit period. If you start saying don't include games on these systems/ up to this year, it just confuses and annoys people. The idea was to get a solid idea of what people consider retro (new games aside) and that's exactly what we got.

1. It is just too many. Even 100 is a lot. 50 pages disrupts the other content.
2. I am not sure I see the point in a _retro_ magazine doing a free-for-all vote. While we probably violently disagree about what is retro, you could have gone for setting rules as "any machine up to and including XXX/YYY/ZZZ" or just let the readers define themselves what they see as a retro game. But still retro.

I did enjoy much of the other stuff which was neatly tied in with the main theme.

as a new subscriber, I felt I needed to express my appreciation for you magazine. I haven't been much of a magazine reader since the late '90, but when I discovered Retro Gamer, I was hooked from page 1. It's hard to find articles so exhaustive and well researched on any topic, let alone retro gaming. Keep up the great work!

The top 150 games special was a very good addition and a nice change, even if (as someone already noted) it disrupted the normal content flow. I personally don't feel the need of a strict organization of contents. A little experimentation here and there is more than welcome, maybe even required for a magazine to improve.

There is maybe just a little issue I have with your magazine. I find the font you use in your articles to be too small. My eyesight is not as good as it used to be, so reading long articles can be a little of a strain. But I'm just splitting hair here.

I'm a big fan of ebooks, but retrogamer is an exception. I just believe that reading about topics from the '80 and '90 has a nicer feeling when done on paper. Call me a nostalgic (or an old fart ).
I find it really uncomfortable to read a magazine on a tablet, anyway. Too much zooming and swiping, especially if the magazine's layout isn't especially designed for digital editions. But that's just a matter of personal taste.

Totally agree with you. I much prefer being able to read the 'real thing.' It's just an option if the font becomes too much of a problem!

Found some very cool sites where you can read many historic gaming mags through scans from dedicated fans. It isn't quite the same, but enjoyable to be able to revisit some classic mags without paying $$$ on ebay

That's probably a wise move. My wallet is already quite slimmer since I started collecting old boxed games. I really couldn't afford magazines too
