Bloggers, Youtubers & Streamers - Why?

Post by Rayne » Tue Dec 29, 2015 3:35 pm

Okay, first of all this is not directed at any specific forum member. This is a question that's been on my mind for a while as I've watched the growing trend of livestreams, youtube uploads and more and more blogs.

My question to anyone who dabbles in these things...why? Really, why?

I've lost count of the number of people shamelessly self-promoting their content on various forums & social media sites, all to gather a mammoth 4 or 5 video views. Is it the joy of creating content? The hope of making it big? Or is it just this generation's form of an old school diary? I'm interested to hear what drives people to something that, to me at least, is completely alien :?

Obviously aimed towards me as I seem to be the only one on the site doing it

For the few that get a ton of views its for the money, its lot of cash for no effort.
Play a game everybody else is, scream a bit and act scared, or sprut a load of "Memes" out
Or just play Minecraft
Or be a moderitaliy attractive girl and get free money from people that think with there censored (mostly horny teens, xhamster is cheaper)

Ones like Angry Joe (anger seems to be a thing) I watched one of his live streams (for a bit) and people where donating money, not talking small amounts im talking about $50, he also had people paying to subscribe for $5.
His reviews are entertaining enough

Then theres the other end of the stick.
Funhaus, they are not really big "gamers" (theres that word again), they are more of an entertainment channel, they dont know much about games and have said them selfs they are more in it for the entertainment, there "Demo disc" episodes tend to be a mix of getting the discs to work and searching crappy flash games, and porn
https://youtu.be/gI_5kAQTxLU?t=135

My self?
I dont give a toss, I do it as I know some people are entertained, why the bloody hell would I want to play a game I hate? Might as well get a few quid to go to charity in the process
I do get a lot more views on techy stuff and mash ups, stuff id rather be making, but most the time I need an idea, I do have some ideas, but its roping others into it, kinda why I tend to either record or live stream stuff, just incase something weird happens or something I feel is worth a highlight
Bit like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd1mHp3_LY4

One thing I cant stand is reaction videos
Or "Overacting" videos, kinda reached the point of pointlessness when people started reacting to podcasts (never watched one, just know they exist) and reaction videos

Anyway this is to serious for me
Heres an animation of a chimp riding a bicycle

Everybody on the internet thinks everybody else on the internet is interested in what they have to say. On anything. I hope this answers your question.
If it's slower than me, dumber than me and it tastes good ... tough titty.

^Interesting insights Prin, and like I said it's not aimed at anyone in particular. Although if I had to pick, it'd be this one annoying self obsessive pr!ck on my Facebook page that constantly posts livestreams over and over, with no one bothering to view them

Reaction videos leave me completely cold.. Bunch of attention-seeking tweens and middle aged men overacting panto-style to announcements, trailers or spooky things.

Beans - Is it really as simple as that? I thought I must have been missing something

Prin, stand down. You're nowhere near. The Laird batters this place with youtube vids. I can't see you taking his spammy crown any time soon. Each to his own. If anybody was that bothered people would be hitting the report button. It's all part of t'internets.

I'll respond, I am fond of blogging, although the last year or so has prevented me from doing what I want to do, my new blog will be about living with LPR and dysphonia because it has changed my life and no-one seems to know what it involves unless they or someone close as it.

Youtubers? nope not me, I made 1 video and it got about 4 views lol, again my health condition prevents it. apart from ashens I stick to music related channels (mainly itv chart show related)

What I don't understand is people that blindly follow 'beauty' youtubers parading what they bought and saying if it was good (of course its good you were sent it and paid to say its good) or showing off their clothes ''hauls'', at least with ashens its tat he has paid for himself and knows its terrible.

Except I don't. I do post my videos here if I think they will interest people and judging by feedback I get they seem to. Was interesting to see that when I took my sabbatical from this place recently several people said they missed me posting stuff like the chiptune videos. I don't even get much time to make proper videos anymore, last one was at least a month ago so not sure what I have been "spamming" exactly.

I only added the link in my sig because it saves me linking people all the time when they ask.

I make videos because I enjoy sharing my passion for gaming, you don't have to watch. And for a person with aspergers who finds social situations awkward and uncomfortable it's also a good release and very therapeutic, much like my writing work actually.

I really enjoyed games mags back in the day and always wanted to do a fanzine but that involved a load of faffing about with photocopiers and whatever else. These days you can put together a website pretty easily and YouTube and streaming sites make video content easy to put out also. It's doesn't take much cash or time and as long as you understand that you aren't going to be the next IGN/Eurogamer/whatever, then it is fine. A small signature link isn't going to be too spammy either so no-one is likely to get offended unless they are the sort of person who just gets irate for no reason about absolutely nothing. If you overdo it then yeah, that's maybe an issue.

For the most part it's something you get almost no feedback on but occasionally you'll get something positive and that's nice but mostly you see it in the page views/video views. My film site is just something I do for myself as an excuse to watch more films. On the plus side, it gets me some review blurays and a bit of press access to events. The PS4 site I run sorts me out with quite a lot of review copies that I distribute to the writers also and again, gets me into some events.

But the answer is generally that it's just a hobby. You try explaining being a football season ticket holder to someone who doesn't get it or camping/fishing/allotments/cosplay/watching live darts. Folks are into whatever they are into.

Dont diss darts
Its the only sport that has the most unafleitc types of people playing
Well it does bring the question

Why watch somebody else play a game?

I will pose the following question
Why watch somebody playing sport? Or watch people watching TV (yes this is a thing), or spend hours on Facebook?

Its more or less the same thing
Like for instance I watch a channel called "Video games awesome"
Like me the main guy isnt one of those "TEH ELETE GAMERZOZ!!111", hes just average
Watching people speed run games seems dull as for the most part they arent really enjoying the game, same with those that know everything about the game (TIME TO PLAY THE GAME HAHAHAHAHAHA!)
Id rather watch somebody enjoying it no matter how crap
Things like EVO has shown us that video games torneys can be fun to watch

Games like LOL and Star craft can feck off

You have a convenient memory, I must say. A brief glance at your recent post history clearly shows you post far more youtube material than anyone else. But whatever. As I said, each to his own. Maybe you should get your "brother" in to defend you on this, eh? It'll be entertaining.

I am a very big advocate of You Tube, so probably, the links are certainly not all to my videos. One of the biggest things that annoys me about this forum actually the lack of You Tube embedding. Stay classy.
