The Computer Warrior

Post by Treguard » Tue Dec 22, 2015 11:39 am

When I was a kid, my brother and I used to get looked after by one of the neighbours after school because my parents were still at work. Their lad got Eagle comic every week and I read it after him, and there was a comic strip about a kid who's friend had been sucked into the 'nightmare zone' and to free him he had to play various C64 games, but for real- I remember there being one story based on Silent Service, where he was an actual submarine captain, one on Kung Fu Master and there was the final test that was Infiltrator. Been trying to find scans of it or if it was reprinted, but no real luck. Anyone else remember it?

Yup, it's been discussed here before:

during which this link was brought up:

Weirdly I don't have any strong memories of it, despite being a regular Eagle reader and avid gamer then.

Yeah, found the old thread but theres no scans or any idea where to get reprints from. I'm assuming Egmont UK owns it from when they bought Fleetway. I'll email them.

There was a guy doing professional collections of some of the stories from Eagle. He did Doom Lord and The Thirteen Floor (which I got off Ebay) /This was quite some years ago now, and I was hoping to see Computer Warrior , but looks like that was it.

He's still doing reprints as he did another Thirteenth Floor (and a couple of Scream ones) last year.

I would have thought that The Computer Warrior might be a bit tricky though as I seem to remember they had a link up with US Gold once it had got popular.

The computer warrior was one of my favourite story's in Eagle. Used to go to sleep dreaming about being like him and yes, I did look for secret ways to get transported into my ZX Spectrum.

Someone on eBay was flogging scans of old British comics.
Though The Computer Warrior didn't appear until well into the Eagle & Tiger period on the cheap paper, Issue #163.

This has been discussed recently over at the 2000ad forum.
The consensus is that this is unlikely ever to see a reprint. The major sticking point (this was gone into in some detail by the guy who runs Hibernia, who have previously done Eagle reprints) is the sheer amount of different IPs involved.
There are so many games included in this strip - and not all C64 ones. Out Run, Shinobi and Ghouls and Ghosts were definitely featured - so that's Sega and Capcom you have to get on-board for a start. On top of that, the main character is likely to be owned by The Dan Dare Corporation who're notoriously hard to deal with. Also, no one seems to know where the original artwork is so stories would likely have to be sourced from old issues, scanned and remastered - a laborious and expensive process.

Basically, it's a nightmare.
