Tell a lie, that Xmas channel seems to use episodes of The Waltons to fill its overnight broadcasting!

Most christmas music is pretty crap though - the only half decent one is "Don't let the Bells end" by The Darkness, and thats mainly for the amusing title.

I'm pretty sure the Salvation Army will be trotted out in High Streets across the land to play "Silent Night", just in case we're not cheery enough about the gift-swap holiday!

On Sunday I tried 355 because mtv classic becomes mtv Christmas, but to no avail. Then I saw Heart had become a Christmas channel, so me and my son had a bit of a boogie at 5.15am.

God bless us, every one.

Are you suggesting that Mary didn't have a secret dalliance and give birth to the greatest con man who ever lived?

I think Mary was the bigger con-artist claiming to have had a virgin birth! :P

I was speculating more on the unlikely birthdate being 25th December (which the bible at no point indicates towards!), which just so happens to align with the birth of another (yet another) spiritual figure/god in Mithra (ok another myth), and is the end date of the pagan festival of Saturnia which of course was then hijacked by christians. Personally I blame Coca-Cola for everything.....probably.

But lets not turn a CHRISTmas thread into a religious debate  :P

I thought it was generally agreed that 25/12 isn't the actual birthdate, just the date of celebration, which, as you say, ties in with other festivals.

A bit like the Queen's birthday.

pretty sure 25/12 was decided upon at the council of Nicaea in 325 AD.

at the same time thy also set the date for easter, and decided that they would make it "official" that Jesus was a divine being, along with all manner of other lies designed to unify all separate parts of the church under one set of rules and thus make the church all powerful

using dates from established religious holidays for their own means made it easier to unify all the churches

maybe any religious folk on here could correct any of the above if I have got it wrong been a while since I read up on it.

The history of Christianity absolutely fascinates me

Can't wait.

I love Xmas and while I know its over commercialised now and all those cynics out there have every right to do so, I personally can't help but enjoy every minute.

Going Christmas shopping in edinburgh on the 3rd 4th and 5th of december with the GF. I have 6 days off for that. Then off from the 19th dec and go back on the 28th so have plenty of time off.

Can't wait to see the kids open the presents and then settle down to play my new games.

Off for 4 days over the new year weekend, the dog hatres fireworks etc so will be going away to a lodge with the kids and GF. its in the middle of nowhwere and is an amazing place to stay.we sit out on the balcony with blankets and hot chocolate and enjoy the peace and quiet. then we head into town centre to see in the new year.

hopefully it will snow this year, as all my neigbours and kids all walk along to the local dry ski slope as although the ski slope occupies one side and is fnced off, the other side of the hill is perfect fo sledges and is brilliant for sledges and some people even take snowboards. Nice flask of hot chocolate and good time is had by all.

I think I get more excited than the kids for christmas.
